First coop (an 8x8 with one window and two runs) was about $900 total. My new, remodeling project that is including room for 5-6 large breeds and three or four bantam breeds with a broody and brooding area is close to $2000 already and we're not even 1/2 done.

Mine is going to be on the end of the Alpaca barn, and I think we have right at $3000 in an 18 x 30, with an 8 foot ext. for the hen house . . .we went to town this morning and got big nails, can't remember what they are called, but it was $17 for two smallish bags of them . . .my dh was amazed at how things have went up in price. Anyway, back to the barn, I can also have a storage room at one end for food and supplies, which will be a blessing, as I am hauling it out in buckets right now to feed the Alpacas every day . . .I did see some packing crates today when I dropped paperwork off at a client's house and I know he owns them and the house is vacant where they are setting, so think I might ask him if he wants to part with them. . .great scrap lumber . . .and to use for the feed to keep it off the floor. . .pallets are hard to find around here right now, and if you get them at a lumber yard they ask you to bring them back, as they are charged $3 for them each now.

omg.. hubby is having a fit.. we just totalled up the coop and run bill.....about 1400.00 .. well it had to be insulated and it was like building two .. one inside the other..and.... well...... it had to be off the ground so they had shade.. and it has to be painted pretty.. right? and.. well he said no more ands.. so guess we are done lol.. but the roos and hens love it.. we even purchased a 12x18 shade cloth for them lol and heated waterers.. and a light timer.. and it is only 8x8 lol....run is about 16x 24...

first mistake was chicken hutch & run $150...built new coop....lowes dog house $169.95......with amendments....grand total $425....so cost per chicken = $142 and change

Well, after all of the complaining, here is what the coop looks like so far. We have only spent $400, and that includes the hardware cloth for the run. We still have to get a few more 2x4's and hardware for the run, but that won't be more than $50.

There is a large 4'x4' door on each side. The nesting boxes will be built and attached to the exterior of the right hand side - we already have the materials for those. The plywood and the tin was recycled, so we didn't have to pay for those materials. Everything else was purchased new.

Edit: Of course, we will paint it and it will be relocated before the chickens move in. We still have to add a pop door and roost in front of the side window.

We figure that we will have to charge $5 bucks per egg to re-coop our cost for the next couple of years

- but we love the coop and it was a nice addition to our property - can't put a price on your pets they are too much fun.

I'll have to update the picture, we now have gravel paths all around the coop - added shade cloth to run and roll up shades for the sides.

@ Dragonfly: my daughter and I LOVE your coop... so pretty. I feel the same about mine. A lifetime of eggs probably won't pay for the cost, but it brings us so many hours of daily pleasure. We even set up a little bench to watch "Chick TV"... I go out every morning to watch them while I drink my tea.
