How much did you spend on your coop? **Update with pics on pg. 12**

Everytime I buy something for the chickens or coop. I think of it in Terms off eggs. How many eggs will I have to sell to pay for these new feeders or a blower fan etc. Then try to decide if I need it or not. It has also helped out at work. Like times my company offers me a job that pays "only" $300. I think how many eggs would I have to sell to make the $300. At $2 a dozen that's 1800 eggs. Thinking of it like that, the $300 trip doesn't seem so bad.

Close to nothing! I have maybe 50 bucks in about 5 coops. Big nice cozy coops framed up like a real house.

We already had most of the lumber and pine trees on our land and lots of left over tin, wire, and scraps from jobs (my DH is a contractor) so we just cleaned up our junk pile and made really cute rustic looking coops that are housey looking. I hang plants off of them and put wooden windows on them to give that housey effect. The only thing I have bought was a couple rolls of chicken wire that we didn't already have enough of.

I spent at least $350...

I could have bought a lot of fresh eggs from the local feed shop...but then I would not have my chickens...one of whom bit me last night as I was checking on them...I almost prepped some baked hen for tonight's dinner.

Anyway, it's worth learning about it! Too many of us have lost the ability to do this sort of thing, and I am trying to get back some of those skills.

DH built the coop. This one is a duplex - divided in half for 2 different breeds with two separate runs. The coop looks like a regular stick building with a real roof. Both of the runs are partially roofed and they have skylights windows and electronic ventilation. The building is insulated and vinyl sided to match our house. I think he is probably underestimating but he said he has about $3000. I really don't want to know but I am a little embarassed. They are awfully nice to look at.

For what it's worth I probably spent more than that, is it overboard? May be. Is it worth it? Most Definately, lol you can see the fruits of my labors and money on my page. Good luck and enjoy it.

I keep spending more than I thought I would! The cost of the hardware and hardware cloth is what's killing me - I didn't budget for

Three 1 lb boxes of nails
one box of washers
Hardware cloth only available in 5' and 25' lengths
10 bags of 1" screws (8 each) (might need more still)
hinges
All the extra additions I keep wanting!

I found a good 30 feet of wood in the alley behind my house and it's been great to have free lumber. However, I'm building a fairly open coop so I'm not worried about sheets of plywood, so the most expensive part of my coop IS the hardware!

I'm at about $110 so far.

65 dollars. My DH converted a shipping crate from his job into a coop along with some wood laying around the oly thing we had to pirchase was some of the chicken wire for the run a friend gave us one roll.
