We ordered a barn from an Amish builder for $3,900, but the chickens only get part of it! $100 chain link kennel from craigs list, but we are selling that and building a stick built run with rolls of welded wire fencing, so the bill is increasing!!
We went frugal, frugal and used material from an old barn that fell down over the winter ... and stuff around
we got special nails for the tin roof ($3)
chicken wire for the run ($50)
and staples for the staple gun ($4)
I spent a grand total of 102.00 on initial wood - another $42.00 on hardware and I did have to repurchase more boards because I did not cut in the order the cut list listed and that was a dumb mistake.
I did the catawbe a frame coop but I only have 2 hens and I am building another for the 4 chicks on order - I will have time before they will need it.
I had not intended having 6 birds just 3 but lost one to the dog and thought I was losing another - she made it! Yeah but hubby ordered 3 more hens and a rooster because he is A) very practical and thought it was more cost efficient and B) By ordering a rooster he figures I need never have to order any more chicks on line - Isn't he silly?
I figure our initial birds teach us how to raise them and I have - ultimate plans to take over the world - (Pinky and the brain) is to have about 20-30 birds meat and eggs on our little goat farm - It is called the goat farm but we have no goats - only 2 chickens but people come and play paintball here at the "GoatFarm"
I live in the city. It was important to have an aesthetically pleasing setup so that there would be no complaints from neighbors. I'm happy with it, but it cost me an arm and a leg. I'm most happy that it added value to my property and is seen as a considerable improvement.
$1,200 Concrete slab
$3,750 Contractor built 8x8x8 shed with dual pane windows
(same price as 1-pane) cleanout door, electrical, "poo
park" roost area and storage cabinet (I'm no builder)
$ 900 Handyman built run 8x40 with 1/2" welded wire buried
2' into concrete, two people gates and shade cloth
$1,800 Contractor built metal roof and planter box added to run
2 years later
$ 500 Nests, 2 water tanks and accessories for indoor/outdoor
watering, and miscellaneous, including first aid kit and
mister system for the run
$ 70 Hatchery bill for 25 chicks even though I am only
permitted to have 10 in the city
$6,430 Total Invoices
That was the bill. The good part is, the contractor who built the shed made a few mistakes. They didn't want to fix them so they wrote off the balance after payment of $375.00. Had a friend fix the problems for free.
Handyman did a crappy job on the run. When he was asked to redo a few things, he screamed at me and said, "It's just for chickens!" I fired him. Friends and family finished the run and made it right. Labor and Materials $650
I have spent 52.00 dollars so far. I have a post on our coop made of pallets.
I got the pallets free the wood to side it free windows free door free got the door knob at goodwill for 1.99 and had to buy 50.00 worth of plywood. Everything eles was given to us or what we had over the years laying around
Thank goodness my hubby is a carpenter.... Here is a pic of it almost done
