how much problem is "couldn't be housebroke"? - adopted, now pics!

Congratulations on the new dog. I haven't read through this whole thread but if you still have problems, you may want to take him to the vet to be sure he doesn't have a bladder infection. We fostered a male lab mix that we did end up adopting that had a very bad bladder infection. He wanted to do his business outside but he just couldn't hold it long enough. Between antibiotics and being neutered, it cleared up and never had a problem again. Good luck with your new dog.

I found an approximately six-month old chihuahua-terrier mix (the vet and I think) the day after Thanksgiving, in the nearest town. Of course, Animal Control was taking a long weekend due to the holiday and I couldn't just leave him running in the street so he came home with me. When I called them on Monday, AC informed me that he was now mine because I had "picked him up, taken him to my house, and fed him". So I ended up with a dog. He had a problem with peeing when excited, so I bought a crate and a belly band. Never had to use the belly band, the crate did the trick. He gets fed there, gets put there to chew on his pig ears, and sleeps there. I regret the money I spent on the belly band, but at the time, I thought it might be necessary. My animals are like my truck; just need to spend money on them occasionally so they know they're loved!

the lab should be EASY!

So glad you got him! The submissive peeing will go away in time, especially with him being in a new loving supportive home who will help him learn how to be a good boy. Be very calm and matter of fact in getting him from the crate to outdoors, and be sure to food reward him for all pottying outside.

We need pictures!!!

Congratulations on the new family member! I wouldn't worry too much about the name. He's in a new environment so just begin teaching him his new name along with all the other "new" things he's learning. Call him by the name you choose then give him a treat. I promise you he'll learn it in a hurry if he gets rewarded every time he hears it. He's still young, so should be adaptable to the new name. The biggest mistake I see with folks who adopt shelter dogs is they baby them way too much! Because they were there in the horrible shelter, they think I won't make him do that, or he's so pitiful, I'll let him by with that. Dogs live for the present. He's in heaven now, so just try to forget his past. He already has. He's with you now and that makes up for the bad shelter experience. Best of luck with the new baby. I'm so glad he's with you, and you care enough to try and work through his issues. Amy
