How much would you pay for a dog?

Right now I have two boys that I paid about 1200 for both, Euro/Dollar exchange rate. Both the parents are working dogs. They are not papered as I didn't care for that. Their grandparents are SchH3 but the parents were bought not for the ring or SchH sport but to actually work on a farm. So to me the price was good. I paid more to ship them back to the states.

My female was free from our trainer.

And our little mutt was 130 from the local rescue. Which I thought fair as she was spayed.

Now $2200 for a Pure Bred dog from working lines or show lines with breeding rights seems ok to me. Never for a mutt though. There is a lot of money put into producing top parents and trying to pass that on to the pups.

But to me a papered dog means nothing. Puppy mills and back yard breeders use those same registry companies.

I paid $75 for my full blood Beagle at the SPCA, and that included microchip. I would never pay for a dog other wise. There are so many pure bread wonderful animals at the shelters its just my opinion that I dont want to contribute to the breeding of animals for profit. Just to add, I had 3 full blood basset hounds many years ago and never paid a dime for them, they were being given away and I always found my dogs that way.

My puppies start in excess of 1K.

I have paid 3K for a dog before. (Adult titled import) It all depends on what you are looking for, what you intend to do with the dog, and what your ultimate goals are.

I know of dogs that have sold for on up into SIX figures. Average price for a finished CH Rottweiler with health testing is mid 5 figures.

I have had free dogs that were absolutely wonderful as well.

Wow! I can't imagine what my husband would do to me if I spent that kind of $ on a dog! We are the type of people that believe in rescuing animals. All of our pets are rescues or strays. The last dog I got was looking for a home through Craig's list so I guess that counts too. She is a pure bred GSP and a real sweetie. There are just so many wonderful dogs out there that need homes, I can't see buying one from a breeder unless you have a particular need for a certian breed. Such as to guard sheep. Just think how many less homeless pets there would be if breeding was banned for 5 years. Our shelters would begin to empty, what a wonderful thing that would be!

A 5 year breeding ban would essentially be the end of dogs. 5 years old is the outside edge for breeding b.itches in many breeds, and complications rise dramatically as b.itches get older.

A breeding ban would make the price of any purebred dog double many times over so that pretty much no one except the ultra rich would be able to afford one.

A ban on breeding is not the answer. Education and helping people become more responsible with their breeding practices would be a good start tho.

My two dogs were PRICELESS

Jessie was $75.00 from the local no kill shelter where she sat for three years - Excellent investment

Angus was a $125.00 honor system donation - Was at a high-kill shelter in Brooklyn NY where I had a rescue pull him and deliver him right to my door - free, shots, microchipped, neutered

I agree, a ban on breeding is not the answer, education and regulation on breeding, as in no breeding AT ALL unless you have a license and pass a state test (Somewhere in the UK that is what they do, I think) and THEN only breeding approved dogs and cats
Not meaning to offend, but that's my opinion, I apologize if I do

I have 7 rescue dogs,& $80 invested in the cost of them. Talk to your local shelter & ask if they have any deemed unadoptable that they would be willing to give to a Good home. The local shelter here is for the sake of the dog, not the profit. Good luck in your search for a dog.

I don't think so. I think what would actually happen is that the well-bred dogs would all but disappear while the mutts would keep right on reproducing. The kind of folks who let their dogs run and pay no attention to whether or not they are in season would keep right on doing that. The strays would continue to breed just like they do now. The only ones seriously affected by such a ban are the very people who are right now trying their darnedest to breed good dogs by breeding the best to the best in a minimal number of litters. They are the folks who test for everything AND follow up on their puppies. They are the only ones conscientious enough to even notice the new rules and to try to obey them. The irresponsible folks would go right on being irresponsible--and we'd wind up with the same tons of mutts, just no good, well-bred pups--exactly the opposite of what such a ban would be trying to achieve.
