How much would you pay for a dog?

Well, it depends on if you are getting what you pay for. A good breeder will do tons of various health tests and evaluations, that add up and can be very expensive. It will also be started in training, leash and crate, and up to date on all shots. If the dog is coming from a show breeder, the cost of the puppy also helps cover the costs of the dog shows.
Please really sit down and think about if you want a doodle. They can be very sweet dogs, but the grooming that is required is is huge. I suggest getting them groomed every 4-6 weeks, and on average in our shop these dogs average about $100. Do you want to pay that every month?
Chances are you can find a less expensive dog, but that breeder will not be doing health testing and will leave you with heartache. There are so many genetic diseases that can show up and end a dogs life early, or having to manage extreme allergies for the entire lifetime of the dog, it just isn't fair. Also, just having the dog be AKC doesn't mean much of anything anymore. You can take 2 poorly breed akc dogs, and make more poorly breed ones even if they are purebred. Without those health tests though, you may just be getting a poorly bred purebred.

OMG you people need to come to the MIDWEST. I paid $50. for a purebred Golden Retriever. Paid $75 for a purebred Chocolate lab and got many a "unwanted" for free. The shelters here charge around $40 bucks for dogs and they are spayed or neutered. I cannot and will not BUY a MUTT pup from the shelter when i can get a registered breed from a breeder for the same amount or get one from a friend that just had an oops breeding for free!!!

HOWEVER, I will add to say I have paid more like $125 for a purebred that was a complete idiot! STUPID as a box of rocks! My mutts have been way smarter!

There is a lab rescue group on petfinder.
They charge $400 and they have a few labs and lab mixes in the 6-7 month range.

ya know it just bothers me that the seller would say " it costs 2200 BUT I will sell for 1400"... what?! (bc the seller broke her wrist? what does that have to do with the DOG doing it's business "breeding"?) I am too skeptical of people. This seriously screams "I am in it for money"....

I would pass on this opportunity if I were you and find someone that is more honest, reliable, and reputable.

I would also like to add that it really does not matter what you pay for a dog...mutt or purebred dog... if you are so lucky to find the dog that touches your life and brings you happiness, the animal is priceless.

I have bred Golden Retrievers in the past and got $600 per pup. My guys are pure bred from show lines. I have not bred in 2 years because the economy has fallen and I can't ask people for that kind of money right now. But the reason for getting $600 per pup is to cover vet bills for a litter of 7,8,or 9 for 8 or more weeks. Plus the cost of food, pee pads, worming meds, registration papers, etc. Then there is the cost of all the medical testing for the parents to check hips, eyes, and hearts before they are bred.

I looked into getting a Golden from one breeder who has the best show lines in the country. I did not get a puppy from her. $2200 and conditions. The puppy had to be fixed (pointless if you want to breed it) or the breeder gets to co-own the puppy if you are going to breed. This way the breeder knows that you are breeding for the right reasons and not being a puppy mill.
Instead, I got my first Golden for $600 from an other source and can still trace his pedigree back 70 or more years.

It all depends on the breeder and the quality of the dog. If the godendoddle came from the best Goldens and the best poodles in the country, I can see justification in the price. But that does not mean that I agree with or would pay that much of a price.

I would probably pay a few hundred iif it was one a really wanted. THat said, so far I have never paid for a dog in my adult life. I currently have 3. Two were dropped off on my road when they were around 5 months old. I didn't have a dog at that time, but after searching for the owner to the puppies for days, I decided to keep them. My last do was kinda on a whim. I was up at my mom's and I was talking about getting a kitten. My husband dislikes cats very strongly and siad either get a puppy or have a baby but NO kittens. Right then a freind of my Mom's showed up and there were puppies in the back of her truck! She said she was taking them arond looking to see if anyone wanteda puppy....So I took one! LOL So thats how I got my 3 wonderful girls, all free

I'm not paying near that much for a purebred GSD from a championship line from a very good, reputable breeder.

Personally, the rescue is the better choice. That money normally doesn't cover what they have already spent on the animal (trust me, I usually spend at least double what I adopt out for). They are UTD with shots, spayed/neutered already, most of the time have been in a foster environment where training has already started and they can give you details on the dog's personality, any medical conditions have been addressed and it will help a dog who started out in a not so lucky situation and many more.

And the designer mutt thing.... they charge that much because the can, people will pay it. Don't get me started..... I have issues with the whole 'designer mutt trend'.
