How much would you pay for a dog?

The most I've ever paid for a dog was $500 for a Pug (RIP Lucy

) Every single dog that I've paid more than $5 for has died young, while all the free mutts and my $5 rescued Pom have lived long lives.

If I can't ride it, I'm not paying that much for an animal

However, if I had the extra money to spend and it was a dog that I really, really wanted I might go ahead and spend the money.

It does annoy me that people spend so much darn money on mixed breed dogs. I didn't even spend $2200 on almost all of my horses for crying out loud!

I'm lucky though because most of the shelters around here will practically give you dogs, or you might have to pay a fee of anywhere between $50-125.

So honestly I would say it is a matter of personal choice, but I don't think there are too many people that would spend that kind of money on a mixed breed dog.

My first dog was a Black and Tan Coonhound. She cost me $40 from the pound, which was refunded when I had her spayed. My first Bloodhound was actually -$5, the pound paid me to take her. My Labradork came from the shelter, she was $34 plus the cost of spaying, so approx $140. My German Shorthair was $15 from the pound as an eight month old, and I had to get him neutered within a month. Funnily enough i've taken him to the local bird dog club a few times and everyone raves over him, he is such a handsome well-mannered dog and he hunts and retrieves with no training. He was taken in as a young puppy and I believe someone must have lost him. My husband's Black Mouth Curs were $300-400 each from breeders. Then there's the 'ouch'... we paid $1000 for my current Bloodhound. However, they are not cheap dogs in general and I wanted one with particular bloodlines to give me the best chance at making a good SAR dog.

$1400-$2200 for a designer mutt though?!! That is insane, and screams of someone wanting to make a quick buck (or several thousand) than someone keen to breed good family dogs.

I'd suggest travelling further afield to shelters. At $400 to adopt one in your area, you'd still be better off! Many will provide transport also, but I understand that you probably wouldn't want to adopt a dog until you've met it.

I wouldn't spend that much. The attorney I worked with sold his Golden Doodles for $400 and they are pure bred.

You cant have a "pure bred" mutt.
"Golden Doodle" is NOT a breed.
Its a cross breed, which is normally called a "mutt"

I would never pay that much for a dog, because what if something happens to it a week after you buy it? If it gets run over by a car you can't take it back and get a refund.

Our current dog was free. The only time I would ever consider spending a lot of money on a dog would be for a Dogo Argentino.

I paid $4oo for my maltese... that is the most I have ever paid... usually I get homeless dogs

To me, paying $1400-$2200 for a Mixed breed dog is the same as paying $400-$500 for an EE. Would you do that?

No, I'm not going to get the dog.

I'm just shocked that it costs $400 to adopt a dog from the shelter here, and $1400 for a designer crossbreed...

I can see spending $200 on a shelter dog if they spayed/neutered the dog... but $400????
