How much would you pay for a dog?

I would hate for Doberman breeders to quit. I just love them. The thing is..... SPAY & NEUTER.....SPAY & NEUTER.....SPAY & NEUTER!!!!!
The people that don't want puppies.....S&N!!! Vets, stop trying to get rich!!! I have been present through hundreds of S&N. It doesn't cost near as much to perform the surgery as they charge!

I have never paid over 350 for a dog. And we have had purebreds for decades. I would never pay that much for any dog-- mixed, mutt, or champion.

The UK does have a different system, but their government is NOT involved, their breed clubs are involved. Involving our government would be a disaster! As it is, they allow puppy mills, i.e. commercial breeders, as long as their paperwork is in order, dogs are individually marked, fed and water. They don't care if they are actually loved, raised in a home, health tested, etc. or anything else, the law states they must meet the MINIMUM requirements, period. Dog registeries are no better, they are registeries, in it for the money, if they tell you different, they are lying, seen it for years. The dog breed clubs are in it for the dogs and the betterment of their breed. In the U.K. your dog must pass all their health clearances, a physical and conformational exam by a panel of judges, no dq's, and must be a conformation champion and often a field champion before it can be bred. Now that is for the betterment of the breed. Their are putting their money where their mouth is. If your dog doesn't pass all of the above, you can't get a breeding certificate and the pups can't be registered.

I don't think i would pay more than $800 for one of the already established purebreds(poodles, lab retrievers, dalmatians, etc) and I would never pay more than $400 or $500 for a labradoodle or golden doodle mainly because I don't want to encourage people to create those mixes without purpose and just to make a quick buck. I can understand if someone is trying to work on them as a breed but I would still never pay more than $500 for what is essentially an experimental animal. I even have a labradoodle, which I got from a shelter. He is a great dog. He's an F1 and sheds like crazy. The F1s are hit or miss when it comes to coat type. I'd love to get another some day though.

And while on the topic of designer dogs, except for the labradoodles, golden doodles and cockapoos, I would never pay any amount of money for a poodle mix puppy or any other designer dog name. I lst the first 3 as ones I would pay money for because they are more established and do have breeders who are serious about the breed. But then you get the puppy mills and backyard breeders that think mixing anything with a poodle entitles them to $800+ per dog. Ridiculous!

Lefty (Border Collie/Kelpie) was free from a cattle working couple in the mountains who have 'never taken $ for a dog' but I did spend about $150 on a 'basket' of their favorite foods from down here in the 'flatlands'. I would have paid ~$500.
My friend paid around $2200 for a GoldenDoodle after researching for two years. She loves her, and can tell you a lot about 'hybrid vigor', which is fine if both parents are healthy and from good lines.
I'd probably go for it but offer less...like $500? Just on principle.
not the best pic... phone pic, will trade out when the good one shows up.

Ditto...Although we have more than 2,they all found us or we rescued them.
I would never spend money on a "lap dog", but I would buy a nice hound or two.

I don't think so. I think what would actually happen is that the well-bred dogs would all but disappear while the mutts would keep right on reproducing. The kind of folks who let their dogs run and pay no attention to whether or not they are in season would keep right on doing that. The strays would continue to breed just like they do now. The only ones seriously affected by such a ban are the very people who are right now trying their darnedest to breed good dogs by breeding the best to the best in a minimal number of litters. They are the folks who test for everything AND follow up on their puppies. They are the only ones conscientious enough to even notice the new rules and to try to obey them. The irresponsible folks would go right on being irresponsible--and we'd wind up with the same tons of mutts, just no good, well-bred pups--exactly the opposite of what such a ban would be trying to achieve.

I too am a rescue-type person. The two cats sleeping on the couch are rescues. The best dog that ever walked this earth and is now buried in my backyard was a rescue. Jax, our GSD is technically a rescue in that his original owner lied through his teeth to the breeder about what his plans were for the dog (I have the paperwork to prove he lied). He stuck Jax in a small outside pen when his plans changed.
I am about to spend more money than I ever thought I would on a dog from a reputable, caring breeder. We have thought long and hard about our purchase and made many preparations. We will be traveling to another state to pick up our puppy. As soon as we get him home we will start spending even more money for life-long vet care, quality food, training crates and devices, and the puppy toys. The pup will become every bit as much of a part of our family as our other creatures are.
Needless to say we are not going to toss him in the backyard and not care if he should wander off in search of some female in heat that he scents. He will not be contributing to the overpopulation problem, under any circumstances.

Most I spent was $600 for my purebred collies.

Least was my $25 mutt when I was a kid.

Both dogs were good and one wasn't any better than the other cause of price!

You spend what you want. It is your money and you should never feel you can't make that judgement call in your spending on your new pup.

You find what you want, can pay and are willing, don't worry about it....follow your own spending gut instincts.

(pic of pups was cute!!)
