How often do you take out the trash?

I'm just curious. My one room mate thinks it's acceptable to take out the kitchen garbage only once a week and by the end of the week the trash is overflowing and it starts to smell. I think that is sooo gross, but since it is her "job" in the apartment I don't want to do it for her. I'm at my wits end!

Anyways, at home we take the kitchen garbage out at least once per day. I think even twice a week would be more acceptable than only once. What do you guys think?

I used to take it out when it got full...
could be daily or every 2-3 days...

then it happened...

Turns out they can hatch out in about 24 hours...

Trash goes out every night after dishes are done, no exceptions!

We take ours out when it is full or when it smells,

whichever comes first.

Depends on the time of the year and what is in it. If there really isn't food in it just empty containers once a week it is, if there is food in it, it gets taken out as soon as it gets full. In the summer we use grocery bags, we have no A/C and if meat gets put in the trash we have little visitors that I have to chase down with the vacuum cleaner before they turn into flies. Hopefully this year we can put that meat in a hanging coffee can so the girls will have a treat. I saw someone say they do that and the chickens go ape over the maggots. We also are more likely to compost in the summer because our compost heap is all the way in the back of the garage and no one likes to walk out there in the cold.

Since we compost all kitchen scraps that DON'T go to the chooks, our trash rarely has anything in it that will smell or rot. So we take it out when its full. That said, it gets full pretty quickly because we have a little holder that holds a grocery store bag and that is our kitchen trash can. So if you think about how quickly a grocery bag can fill up, that's how often our trash goes out. Most times its once per day. Occasionally more, occasionally it takes 2-3 days to fill it up.

Atleast once a day, ours fills up fast for some reason, I have yet to figure out why. I think it's because there's 7 of us but I'm not sure yet.
