How often is too often...

... to worm?

I wormed everyone about a month ago, and I noticed a few had runny droppings, so I wormed again today with Wazine. And surprisingly a few small worms were passed. Is monthly worming too much?


I'm going to start putting garlic powder in their food, but until then I have to do something.


One of my Roo's droppings are so runny that its nearly complete water. I am going to have to feed him some grated carrots, and try some oatmeal or cooked rice or something to help harden things up. Any ideas?

The only thing I know, is that we worm them only when we see symptoms. Should we do it more often?

The Wazine I bought says not to use it on your chickens if you are going to eat the eggs.

That made me nervous, so I have never wormed my chickens. On the other hand, I have never seen any symptoms that indicate worms.

Some people say if your chickens go outside they have worms, but not to worry too much, and others worm all of the time. It's very confusing for me.

I don't want to ingest chemicals; that was one of the main ideas behind getting chickens. But on the other hand, if your chickens are sick you have to worm them, right?

Hey Mikasgirl,

I have heard this before, but the bottle actually has a warning in big, bold letters that says DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT IN CHICKENS PRODUCING EGGS FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION. Period. Scares me.

Maybe there are other worming medications that do not have this particularly scary warning on them, that actually tell you that you can use this on your egg-layers but don't eat the eggs for two weeks or something like that.

Poulets de Cajun, I think the wormer merely renders the worms incapable of hanging on to the chicken's innards, it does not kill them. That may be why a few "hung in there" after the first worming, and a second treatment might get them all. I also wonder how long the worm eggs take to hatch and how all of that works.

I have also heard that wormer is very hard on the chicken's health, so I would be a bit reluctant to worm too often for that reason.

Well, I am still breathing and I eat my hens' eggs so looks like I waited long enough! The last time was about 6 months ago, I believe. We waited for about a month.
