I think everyone on here is used to the hard shells. I bet if we kept our hens in those itty bitty cages with a couple other hens, their egg shells would be easily cracked, too. I don't know what they feed those hens, so can't judge on the food.
I just got my first egg this weekend! I was beginning to give up hope. My girls are Buff Orpingtons. One began laying at 23 and a half weeks and we are still waiting on the other one. The eggs are brown with a few white speckles and about 2" tall. I have gotten 2 so far (nothing yesterday and I haven't checked yet today). My only question is that they have some smears on them that looks like it could be blood. Is this normal? Or is it something else? There is barely any on it and I don't see any blood on my girls...
Mine finally laid at 25 and a 1/2 weeks. She's so heavy she flips the egg boxes when she stands on the edge. I even tied them down and she still flips them every once in a while. BUT, she's my prettiest hen so I try to accommodate her.
