How old were you when you got your first chicken?

I have the feeling that I am a pretty late bloomer - in my 40's. It could be that the kids are all flying off to college and I was looking for something to fill the empty nest, at least at first. But now, I'm totally in love and could not see my yard without the pitter-patter of little chicken feet.

My youngest daughter got me my first three chicks for Mother's Day.

What's your story?

wow, looks like us "old duffers" are in the lead !!

I moved from Northern Illinois to Southern Illinois, at the age of 44, to live near my aging parents, who have a 35-acre farm. I LOVE the critters, from the chickens to the dogs to the naughty goats, etc., so it was just the natural next step for me (I bought a house on 6 acres w/ a pole barn). Now I have chickens, 4 roosters, 7 Pekin ducks and one Miss Goose.

love my fowl !

We are in our early 50's!

We got our first chickens last Labor Day, 9/1/2008. That's just a year ago and we've laughed and cried over our chickens. Thank goodness for BYC. We've also learned alot from everyone here!! Thanks to everybody!

i am 57 and just now have chickens. i have had pets all my life.. dogs, cats, chipmunk, turtles. ferrets.. just never chickens. boy did i miss out..i love them .. they are alot like my little parrot.. very lovey dovey.. except for the one rooster. but the other two roos are very petable.

My dad had chickens before I was born and then when I was born had none but got more when I was about 5 or 6 I think?? Their names were Cotton and Coco

They were part of my family (as you can see, 4 generations of chicken men "counting me" which raised the American gamefowl). But when i had my own, that were actually mine and not dads. About 4-5.
