How thrifty are you?

Thought we could share ideas on saving money, especially with the current economic situation.
I made my chicken tractor out of recycled wood, made the feeder out of a plastic jug, and recycled a gravity waterer for the chicks (was for doggies, but two of mine are too big). I got the chicks cuz I am sick of paying so much for nasty store eggs, putting in a garden to feed us and the chickens.

I made a 5 gallon waterer out of a 5 gallon bucket. I am using PVC pipes to make 2 feeders. We have an old horse barn on the hill that I have been taking apart and using it for the new coop. Only thing thats new is the plywood, chicken fencing and some lumber.

We're not, particularly... however I will say that Noodles & Co takeout containers make good egg delivery containers (can usually get 11-12 eggs in one)... and are very reusable as tupperware as well.

I cut the flaps off Priority mail boxes to get them under the next weight limit.

Oh wait, that's not thrifty, that's cheap!

I've just made a feeder out of a 4 gallon bucket, a small chicken house out of surplus lumber (had to buy the hardware cloth and hinges, latches etc) and today I will finish the waterer out of 2 gallon bucket. I stalled on finding a dish large enough to sit the waterer in but I now realise a planter tray will surfice. I hope to have that completed today.

Of course I use recycled egg cartons and all the paper feed bags I use for putting my bottles and cans in for recycling.

It's NOT cheap, it's a great idea! I'll have to remember next Christmas......

I started recycling egg cartons as soon as I got my chicks. I use my plastic grocery bags for trash liners for the smaller cans.​

I've got a home made PVC feeder too.

Lately I've been getting in trouble for bringing home "scraps" from work. FYI you can cut the ends off of old cable spools then cut them in half for making ends for hoop coops!

I would love to see your homemade PVC feeder. Mine only has a 1 inch in diameter hole but the thing is over 5 feet high. We also use those green bags that are found in supermarkets. only $1.00 each here but well worth it. We also recycle everything and keep the those things that opens the soda pop cans for cash. We have over 1,000 of them

I am just a major sale hunter. I check all sale ads, clip coupons, buy clothing at end of season clearance (got my favorite jeans for $1.75 at JC Penneys last Summer) make almost everything from scratch (packaged food is garbage and costs more). Oh, and my best find yet, our WalMart has a promo with the msot wonderful $1 a yard fabric (will only go through May so I am stocking up). I just made new (GORGEOUS) curtains for every single room in my house and spent almost nothing!!! My trash is charged by the bag (almost $2 per bag) so I recycle, re-use, or burn almost EVERYTHING. I have it to the point that almost the only thing the trash man picks up is cat litter.

I am growing tomatoes again this year and have been taking home all the pickle buckets (as planters) from one of the resaurants at the casino. I also planted soem strawberries in old planters (even tho I wanted pretty new ones) since I needed to reuse all the ones sitting in my garage.
I have been posting up Free Bunny Poop on Freecycle so I won't be throwing away something gardeners pay money for, I actually have a waiting list for it too!
I need to start bringing in all my cloth tote bags to sack my groceries up in but Lucas reuses the plastic bags when he is cleaning the cat's litter box.
I also take the nonshiney cardboard boxes and fill them up with hay for the bunnies to play in and chew on. Get free pine cones from a grove next to a golf course for them to play with too. Use onld toilet paper and paper towel rolls stuffed with hay for them to toss around and munch on.
Yeah I'm cheap!
