Chehalis, WA with my chickens
Today there were fireworks going off, so I went to check the chickens. My laying Buff Orp, Tiffany, was laying on the ground. Her whole body was vibrating. I gently picked her up and cradled her in my arms. She relaxed and snuggled into my shirt. I held her like this on the porch for nearly 45 minutes until she woke up from her little nap and wanted to go back to the coop. When I put her back and walked away, she stood at the run door squawking very loud. How can I calm her down? She was squawking from when I put her back (4:00-ish) and almost squawked non stop until dark. I actually had to manually put her on the roost, and she went immediatly to sleep. She didn't even lay an egg today (she's an afternoon layer), and I know for sure she's not egg bound. What can I do in the future?

I would suggest giving her some quiet for a day or two. She might not lay while she's stressed. You did well, just give her some love and cuddles until she goes back to normal :hugs

Here's how to calm a chicken (or chick) that is badly upset. It applies to any situation, not just the insanity of the Fourth.

Very slowly reach for the upset chicken. Sudden movements will make things worse. Rotate the chicken so her head is tucked between your arm and your body. This effectively creates a dark, secure place where the "danger" disappears. Do this while "shhhing". This calms them further.

On occasion, I will have a disturbance at roosting time, the chickens bickering and thrashing about. A sudden and loud "shhh!" quiets them right down.
