Along with my bargain garage sale find (1 1/2 incubator) for $10., I also got the home made candler. It is a paint bucket with a hole in the lid, and the light inside the can.

My question is, how do I use this? I thought I am suppose to put the light source on TOP of the egg. Is that correct? Or, would I just sit the bucket on the table, and sit the egg on top of it (over the hole)? I don't see how to hold the bucket on top of the egg?

I must always keep the smaller end of the egg pointed down, correct, even while candeling? How much time do I have to have these eggs out of the bator? Do I open and close the bator for each egg, and take one out, or do you just leave it open the whole time you are candleing? I am worried about the whole thing getting too cool.

While I have your attention, I would like to ask another question: I plan to candle the eggs on day 8 ??? or day 10??? Then, do I wait until lockdown, for the next candeling? Am I suppose to see the spider-web look of veining, on days 7 - 10? I read somewhere that this is not visable after the first 7 days. Huh? If I wait til day 8, 9 or 10, what will I see then?

The light source will be inside the can; the egg will be held over the hole on the outside of the can. I use the light from a slide projector - very bright but doesn't get too hot too quickly.

Chicken eggs are candled on days 7, 14 and I do a quickie on day 18 when I take them out of the auto turner.

I think there is a good "sticky" on hatching eggs at the top of the first page on this forum, that might help as well.

Good luck!!! It is fun and exciting.

Yeh, I understand that ....
but, do I have the bucket BELOW the egg, and am candleing from under the egg (the pointy small end)? OR, do I hold the bucket ABOVE the egg, the larger end of the egg?

I make no sence, do I ?

I guess I should NOT turn the egg upside down, so I will try it by holding the egg under the light source.

I know Im way late on this but I think you do what you were thinking and put the small end over the light that is on the table and then candle that way. Atleast thats what I get out of the catalogs that have those type in them. How did it go?

ETA: My hubby said his grandma had one like that and she made a little cone like for doing easter eggs and added it ontop of the bucket to hold the egg.
