How To Catch A Chicken

Sometimes I need to catch mine during the day but I refuse to run. Now sometimes I may be walking for what seems forever but I don't run after them. Only part that drives me nuts is the one that might start to do a circle around something. Eventually they will get somewhere that I can trap them in. If that doesn't happen soon enough though, the fishing net comes out. They are all freaked out by that net. If there's a way I can do it w/out the net, I will. But I'd rather net them than walk after them for an hour.

I really try not to need to catch them till they're roosting though. SO much easier to lift one off a roost than to chase/walk them all over the danged place.

10-4, I agree. I WILL try, (or have tried) and injured my knee, to catch them nicely. They begin to run, and then it's chaos in the coop. We all take a pause for the cause and then the net comes out. It may be a little scary for a short while to the chicken, but it's humane. We can net them quickly, do our business, and let them go back to their life. I love everyone one of my chickens, and would never harm them. This just w

We use a net and the chicke's know what is about to happen when we just walk in the yard holding it...everybody starts talking and warning the others we have the net..it is so funny, they know....smart birdies..I love my birdies

Some of my chickens, I could catch just by picking them up or bribing with some treats. Others... not so much. When we decided to sell five of our older chickens to make room for new chicks, I had quite an adventure on my hands. Obviously, I had no intention of selling my friendliest chickens. Those were my girls, my pals. Besides which, the buyers lived out in the country, and needed chickens with stronger survival instincts if they were going to have a chance.

You know the problem with chickens who have strong survival instincts? They're hard to catch.

I was chasing hens in and out of a cedar hedge for about fifteen minutes. Finally, I got them flushed out and into the open where I could net them, but not before running myself ragged. Fortunately, I only had to chase down a couple that way--the other three were still in the run at the time and I was able to close them up and corner them.
