How to deter a mountain lion

We dont have mountain lions here despite what you may hear at the local watering hole. But we do have bears, lots and lots of bears. Calling DNR about a nuisance bear is useless. They tell you to lock up your trash and remove temptation.
When that doesn't work and the bear is found banging on your door you are still not allowed to shoot it. Its like a burglar. You must be in imminent danger.
Again, not sure about the lions, but you better be dang sure you are following the laws before deciding to fire a shot.

All of my neighbors have livestock, we're a farming community. We all got together today and discussed it, and it seems one old timer knows a friend of a friend who can come trap it....
Idk, I'd just as soon put up the hot wire in the mean time.

If you are able to put up hotwire it will be useful for years to come against many predators, so probably worth the investment. You could make some scat mats and put them around the coop itself.

Yeah, in my experience DOW doesn't often DO much, but they will let you know your rights and they will track sightings/encounters in the area in case they determine it becomes a serious problem. I remember a lion killed in the past year around Bailey and they were just like, well, it had it coming, we have all these reports of it close to people's houses and it had killed some goats, and in the end there wasn't much outrage or anything about the fact that someone had finally shot it.

When its killing pets and stock SSS. We had a Dog last year kill chickens, ducks and a horse over a mile range. It got my dads dog. My 80yr dad ran him off with a rake before it killed his dog. The vet stitch on his dog for an hour. Animal control told me shoot it on sight anywhere in the city and nothing would be said. The police and animal control know I'm a NRA competitive shooter and carry. The dog killed the horse in a pasture next to the middle school.

This. Or mountain curs of large bloodlines. Or some of the larger mastiff types mixed with a catch type bulldog.

The right pack of dogs can take a mountain lion, or a panther as we call them in Florida.
