How to distinguish red-legged partridge

Hey guys, i would like to know if there is a way to determine the sex of a red-legged partridge without DNA.

Males have small bumps on the back of their legs, that's their spur. Females are smooth legged.

I've read somewhere that some females also had spurs, is that wrong?
