Hello everyone!

I have a pullet named Tooki who just turned 4 months old. I am told that she will start laying by the 5th or 6th month. Tooki has been very sick for more than 2 months. I have started giving her water through dropper to keep her properly hydrated in the past week as she flaps around a lot and spills the water. She cannot walk at all as her legs are completely split. I have read that during the egglaying stage the hens squat. However, seeing Tooki's condition I am nervous as to how she will manage this. So, this is my main question. How do I help Tooki keep healthy once she hits her laying stage? I have a kennel that I will be using as her nesting box. It is very thin and I have seen her lift herself slightly in it using the support of its walls so I am hoping that it will aid her in egglaying.

PS Tooki is probably a broiler. My mom rescued her from a road and we are now raising her at our apartment. We are vegetarians so we don't really care about the eggs. But since there is no way that we can avoid this stage, we need for a way to keep her healthy and alive during it.

Tooki's supplements information:
I am giving her multi vitamins daily and have also gotten calcium syrup as well as seashell grit for her. I am not giving these to her at the moment as she had a 14 days course treatment for Rickets (Calcium 3 times a day, free choice seashell grit, vitamins once a day) and so I am giving her a few days off from all the supplements. I will be restarting her vitamins in a day or two.

This may sound harsh, but it's not meant to be and reality is frequently harsh. She was not meant to live this long. She was meant to live to 8 weeks and then be processed. She is not going to lay eggs, and she is not going to get better. Sadly her genetics are against her. The kindest thing would be for someone to mercifully euthanize her. :hugs

You should put this poor creature out of her misery. She has no life quality and as far as I can tell, no prospects of recovery.

If she's been sick for 2 months and vitamins are not helping, it might be time to consider that her quality of life is not good. Broilers aren't bred to live long lives. Most of them are bred to be eaten by six or eight weeks old.

At this point, since she cannot walk and might be in pain due to the leg deformity, and you've been trying to get her better for over two months with no improvement, it might be time to consider that she be put to sleep. Being unable to walk and now not even being able to hydrate properly without having water forced into her, she is not living a good life. In these cases, the best and most merciful thing to do for an animal can be to end their suffering.

I want to say thank you for trying to give this poor chicken a good chance. I'm sorry she is not doing well and not recovering. I would not worry about the egg laying. This is something that is natural for healthy chickens. If she is well enough to lay, she will lay, and all you would need to do is be sure she has good nutrition, which it sounds like you already do. If she is not healthy, she might not lay, which is ok for her. If she continues to get worse, you must consider if she can/will ever recover. If a she does not start drinking on her own within a few days, unfortunately, her prospects are not good. People and animals cannot go long without water and once they are so ill that they cannot even drink water, there generally is not much chance of recovery or good life after that. Good luck with your chicken :hugs

@Tanya22 I'm very sorry to hear that Tooki is not doing well.
As we have discussed several times in your other thread(s), you need to evaluate the quality of life that Tooki has.
With the leg bone deformity and suspected Marek's, she just is not improving. I don't see how she will ever be able to lay eggs.
I understand it's hard and that you care for her deeply, but it's time to set your feelings aside and look at this practically and do the right thing for Tooki. End her suffering.

Yeah I agree with you there's no improvement come after months of Multivitamin and calcium doses

I also thinking for Marek's but the fear is this that she having another Rooster too if tooki have Marek's possible that brownie have Mareks too as this is the super contagious thing

She will not cull her at any sake
She love her so much
She will care for her till last
I also want tooki recover but at any resort I suggest nothing work

Neither sling nor Vitamin

I don't know what tomorrow brings it's hard to loose a pet
