I took a pullet that was showing signs of Marecks to my vet and paid $63.00 to have her put down. It broke my heart and I bawled over my lil Fiona.
I tried to work up the nerve to do it myself but just couldn't. The staff was so kind and the vet brought her back out in the box I brought her and positioned her to look like she sleeping. If you can find a farmer that would do it for you or research the dry ice option.

I used the baking soda/vinegar method to cull a chick a few months ago. She had a splayed leg that I'd been doing splinting/physical therapy on for a month. It was getting worse, and she was starting to get picked on by the other chicks.

I found the baking soda/vinegar method to not be too awful at all, and I'm really quite squeamish and sensitive.

The baking soda method did work very well at all. She lasted way longer than they said she would. I am Not doing that again.

Oh NO! and I think u said you have 5 total? Oh Goodness, I am so sorry... cant you call a friend to help you??? Did you use as small container as possible and test your mixture first? The other site I listed above had more details, white vinegar not apple cidar? I am so sorry you have to go through this, I pray I never do : ( awwww

I only euthanize'd one so far. Yes, I tested the mixture and did everything the website said to do. I used baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. I think I'm gonna need to find a vet that will do the rest.

As sad as this sounds, you are going to have to do something and it's going to be unpleasant. I mean, you're taking a creature's life. It's necessary and you are absolutely doing what's best for them. I'm by no means trying to make you feel bad. But you must think of it how it is. You're taking an animal's life. There is no pleasant way to do it. You're doing it out of love and mercy. You must also keep that in mind. Maybe you could use the broomstick method? The way I kill grown chickens (for meat) is to slit their throat. I definitely don't recommend it if you've never done it before. It's hard to get right and you feel horrible when it doesn't go well. (ask me how I know) For these being older chicks, if I didn't already know how to slit their throat, I would probably invest in a good pair of pruning shears and cut their head off. You don't even have to watch whatever you do. Just get it where you want it, turn your head away, and push, pull, squeeze, or drop whatever method you choose.

I'm so very sorry this is happening to you and I hope very much that I didn't upset you. I know very well the kind of tender feelings this brings, trust me. A lot of people say "I understand" but don't really mean it, they just say it for consolation. I really do understand how you are feeling. I recently had a chick with a tumor, a chick with some kind of leg difficulty, 2 ducklings with aspergillosis, and a deformed hatchling (I hatched myself) they ALL died or had to be culled, within a couple days of each other. It's a very sad thing to do, but sadly, it must be done. I know you know that and you are going to make the absolute best decision you can. You will do fine, I'm sure of it. *big hugs* from Texas.
