How to keep waterers from leaking over the edge?

This seems like an odd question but I wonder if I’m doing something wrong. Every waterer that I’ve tried leaks over the edge. Is there something I could do to prevent so much water from coming out into the tray at one time?

Two possible issues; either the waterer isn't on a level surface, or the handle attached to the top of the can has leaks around the seal.
Mine are on blocks or bricks, and I'm careful to have them level. Also, the five gallon size is too heavy to carry by the handle, the seal will fail.
If it's about a failed seal, silicone caulk will repair it.

yeah no i do not have that issue. It kinda looks like it screws on and could screw on a bit more (or maybe it can't and that is the problem)

The hole the water comes out of should be lower than the lip of the dish and if it isn't then I'd seal it up with some silicone to lower the hole.

As they said, it needs to be sealed well. That works on a vacuum principle, if the vacuum is not perfect it will leak.

The usual problem though is that it is not level. It's hard to keep it level when it is sitting on shavings. If you install some type of base, a thick piece of lumber or maybe a cinder block, so it is really level that can stop a leak. Raising it up like that also helps reduce how much bedding gets scratched into it so it doesn't get as dirty as fast.

You guys are great, thank you! You made me realize my really dumb mistake...I have this hanging from a chain. The seal is most certainly messed up by doing that. The plastic waterer that I used to have was hanging, and when that tray got bent it would leak out one side. So I got this metal one hoping the tray wouldn’t bend. But now here I am with the same problem :he
