How to put a chicken down..

I would say just cut the head off with a sharp knife/axe.
I would think that would be a better death than spending the last hours in pain before you figure out what to do.
And then, being forced into a barrel?
I think that would be more traumatic than just being laid down outside on a pretty day and then, whack. over with in a matter of seconds.
The gun could be messy. But, we have a .357 which would probably eliminate the need to bury b/c he would be all over the yard.
Whatever you decide, make it quick. It's not easy to end something's life. For every minute you draw it out, the animal is suffering.
I know it's hard.

Acepromazine. It is a yellow colored injectable sedative. Also comes in pill form. Rompun is xylazine, another sedative. Both are available only from a vet.

I told her she would have to get it from a Vet

if her Vet would let her have it, many will not. I live in a small town, all I have to do is walk in tell them I need a bottle of Ace. I do not have to take my animal in to get it. But, not many vets will do that.

Uh oh. Poopy butt is what my chicks got before they died. I kept washing it off and it kept coming back.

If it is a really tiny chick, you can just go throw it in a big fire ant bed. You can always bury the bones later, if you want.

Please just cut off the head and give the bird an instant death.

Freezer is painless for you but their body will go though pain while slowly shutting down, going though hypothermia and finally die.

Gassing may be "go to sleep" to you, but have you ever watched an animal get gassed? They jump, gasp for air, and then twitch around till they pass out.... MUCH slower than just snapping their neck.

Please just learn how to humanely take a life or get someone who can do it for you. If you want the best for the animal, out of sight out of mind is not the way to do it.

Great!! How many of your's did that? All of them? There is an older chick in the box with them who seems fine. And the 2 I put outside last week seem fine as well as the others with the flock...

Small town vets are practical people. Big city vets just worry it will end up in someone's drink at the bar on Saturday night.

We would give it out if we knew the people knew how to use it. These are sedatives though and she would still have to kill it some other way. An OD dose for a chicken is..???? I have no idea. A few tabs of benadryl might have the same effect.

Might as well bring the chicken into the vet and have it euthanized. Money not needed to be spent though. I dispatch mine with a sharp ax. Messy but quick.

Oh dear.. I didnt know that about the gas. Everyone said they just went to sleep.

The axe will be the quickest way. She will not suffer. It's over in a second.
