How To Raise A Rooster

couldnt let him be bullied .
oh good! HE will be a happy boy!

I raised two beautiful Rhode Island Red roosters from babies (bought them at five weeks). When I was raising them I did baby them but as they got older I backed off of babying them. R.I.s have been my favorite babies to raise so far. I gave one rooster to my uncle (see the roo frequently) and traded the other for hens. I personally would have kept one but city regulations are a pain. Anyway, those were the best roosters I have seen.

Did the one that went to your uncles go to a flock with hens? Any problems with floggings?

She needs to be removed in my opinion. My last Rooster killed 2 hens by holding them down on the ground and spurring them to death. Good luck, I'm wondering why we want Roosters, I like the crowing and beauty of them but I'm not sure all the crazy attacking is worth it, :)

well I jynxed myself:((( Coco, the wheaten ameracana roo has got to go:( Tonite he started 'attacking' my older hens, and it wasn't nice:(
Snowy the big wusser roo, just stood there and watched..he doesn't mess with the older hens, unfortunately coco doesn't seem to mind..

So I've isolated him, and will advertise him FREE to a good home..He'll be 5 months old Nov 21, marek's vac'd..If anyone is in CT and interested in him , he's FREE to a GOOD HOME, not for food or fighting...You can email me at [email protected]. He's easy to handle and pretty friendly..I just won't put up with him possibly really doing damage to my older girls..

I have two baby roos they are 9 weeks old. Today a hawk caught one of my hens and took off with her. Again they are all only 9 weeks old. I was very sad. My dominant roo is on very high alert and wont let anyone leave the coop. Will he at some point run off the second rooster? At what point will they bravely defend their girls?

Sounds to me like he is doing the best he can by keeping them in the coop. A hawk is fast and if the roos couldn't get to her in time then there really isn't much they did wrong. Go in and shove them out of the coop. People have suggested putting fishing wire lines across the yard. And CD's. The reflection is supposed to deter the hawks.

Oh boy you have your hands full! That poor fellow missing the eye will need to be meaner in order to stop getting picked on. Hopefully he snaps on one of them and they all see! How long has the the other been doing that with the ladies? I heard you are supposed to give them a few months to see if they get their hormones in check.

well im trying to find him a home as he might be handsome but the ladies dont like him, things have calmed down since i re-homed chunk and lincoln is in a pen with a lady, the others seem to be getting on a little better , but i am just making sure they all stay people friendly, as ive had a nast roo and dont want another! my grandchildren can still pick these up
