I used a very scientific method that seems to have worked great for me. I wanted 10-15 Australorps with maybe 1 roo and was waiting for a local lady to post an ad. When she did she had 9 that were roughly half Aus and half Aus x Lavender Orp 1 wk old. I took all 9 nine. So far at 5+ wks there is 1 that is distinct from all the others with what seem to be roo characteristics. Science and blind luck are pretty much the same aren't they?

well buying chicks from a store is another thing, for instance cal ranch orders in mostly pullets which are females, with a few exceptions bantams m ducks and meat birds are straight runs usually so you can get either, while another farm store may order in straight runs which you can get male or female. Did notice the difference and asked the other feed store where we got the last chicks. Easy way to tell in a store is if they say they are pullets , they are 95% sure of it, otherwise they are most likely a straight run.

hope this information helps make it a little easier for people just starting or that have restrictions like no roosters, so you don't have to end up re-homing anyone

Keep in mind that the chicks in question here are being wing-feather sexed --- wing feather sexing is not universal as it requires specific genetic selection of parent breeds to assure that a fast feathering cock is put over fast feathering hens resulting in chicks that hatch with the feathering rate of the opposite sexed parent and the reading must be done in the first three days of life.

Are they EE/EE bred chicks or first generation EE from pure-breed parent stock on either side of the equation? If the latter, what two breeds were used? *Some* EE can be created in a way that would result in sex linked off spring - otherwise, you just have to use the standard "wait and evaluate" as they grow and start getting a better idea around 4-6 weeks + as color/pattern and comb type/structure emerge.

I purchased these from a lady down the road, but pretty sure they are EE/EE. (Some are possible Dominecker/EE cross)
Wanted to try my incubator out and she has an abundance of eggs. So I told her to collect all her colored eggs and I would buy those from her to hatch.
