Hi,
I am posting on here to see if I can get some help or some advice on how to treat my backyard chicken using tylosin powder. I have never used this product before. But it was recommended in a previous post to treat mycoplasma. I'm not exactly sure if this is what she has? But I thought that it wouldn't hurt to treat her for it. I have mentioned this previously but I am treating her at home due to my circumstances. I can't afford a vet, and there are no vets in my area that will treat chickens. So I'm basically on my own and trying to treat her as best as I can at home.

This post is in conjunction to my previous post about my chicken named "Mercy". To make a long story short, I've noticed a decline in her health in the past few months. I've tried a few natural remedies like feeding her fresh oregano, thyme, and other remedies. I'm not sure what's going on with her, but her eyes get swollen. And i've tried to use eye drops to treat her eyes. I've also noticed. She has lost a lot of weight, and she's continuing to lose weight. She also gasps for air. Which can indicate a respiratory issue as well as clear mucus coming out of her nostrils. However, it seems like she's still wants to eat and drink water. So that's good. But I noticed she doesn't eat as much as she used to. She also was one of my strongest layers last year. And ever since she's gotten sick, she has stopped laying all together.

I just wanted to give a little bit of background before I asked for help on how to treat with tylosin. I ordered Tylosin powder online and I followed the directions on the package. And says, one teaspoon, per one gallon of water. It also says you have to change the water daily which I have been doing. However, since i'm only treating one chicken, I thought it would be a waste to be throwing out almost a gallon of this medicated water every day. Especially because it was kind of expensive.

So I decided I would only give her a little bit at a time for each day, then I would take the rest of the mix and store it in the fridge. Hopefully that's okay to do? That's where I think I might need some guidance. I have already been treating her. This is day 4 for her. I've noticed a slight improvement, but not much. It does say to treat 7 days. Which I plan on doing. I'm just not sure what to do afterward if I stop treating her and then I start up again if I don't see her improve? Or do I try another remedy or medication? I will try to post pictures of her so you can see her current condition. Also a few days ago I noticed her tongue sticks out the side of her beak, and I can't seem to put it back into her mouth. It's like it won't move. And now it seems like it's stuck like that that her tongue won't go back into her mouth. So that's another concern of mine that hopefully somebody me be able to tell me what's going on? I would really appreciate any advice or guidance anybody is willing to give. TIA! 😊🐔❤️

Poor thing! Is she the only bird you have?
She needs the Tylosin 24/7, so just keep it out for her and make sure she's drinking it, and that its the only source of water. That's the way it'll be most effective. So do the full 7 days with access to the Tylosin water 24/7.
She definitely has something respiratory going on, and the Tylosin should be able to treat it.
Give her high protein foods along with her typical feed to help her gain weight. If needed you may need to tube feed, or use the "torpedo feeding" method.
I hope she pulls through!

Thanks! Me too! I hope she pulls through! I love my girl! I have 7 birds including her. I have her isolated from the other chickens right now. Ok thanks for the tip on tylosin. So I guess I'm doing it right. Any recommendations on high protein foods. I've just been feeding her wet laymash & pellets I make it to like applesauce texture so she can easily eat it. But I'm open to any other foods that could help her? Also I'm kinda familiar with tube feed method but what's torpedo feeding? Thanks again for your friendly advice!

I tried my best to nurse her back to health! But I have a feeling she was older and it was her time to go! I felt like I was gonna lose her soon! But I thought maybe there was a chance that she had a little more time! Do It's a tough day for me!! I received help her in the past so thank you everyone! ❤️🙏

Make sure you're giving the rest of the flock Tylosin.
Good high protein foods are eggs and meat.
Torpedo feeding is basically mixing water and chicken feed until its the right consistency to roll into balls, and then you pop them into the mouth.

Thank you. Thanks for answering all my questions. I'll keep that in mind for the future! I was thinking about treating the rest of the flock too! Is there a withdrawal period for the eggs? And is it ok to refrigerate any leftover tylosin water? Very interesting about torpedo feeding! I'll have to try that one day if another one of my chickens gets sick!

You're most welcome!
The rest of the flock likely caught the same issue so I would 100% treat them.
I'm not sure if there's an egg withdrawal or not.
I also have no idea about refrigerating the Tylosin water, I'm going to guess you shouldn't? But, I don't know.
Torpedo feeding isn't hard and good for those who don't like tube feeding.
