How to treat sour crop

Glad it worked for you! In the future if you need it again-I let the oil settle to the bottom of the capsule first and then cut the top off. You can then suck out the inside with a syringe.

I love Terry Golson's blog!!! When I saw the post about the krill oil pills I was like score! We have them and take them too. I ran upstairs and found out, that the pills have almost the hardest casings ever, and if you do succeed in breaking them, the oil spills everywhere and you don't get any. So after having her try to eat it, I got it to go down her throat. I think she might be feeling better. Thank you!

I know this is an old post but using a push pin will work great. Let the oils settle to the bottom and poke in the top!

Thank you all for your help. My Jersey Giant "Boo" showed all the symptoms. I picked her up, burped her, and she threw up 4 times. It was very nasty since she shook her head after every barf and got it all over me, but she is much more mobile now and seems to be doing better. I will help her out twice a day for a few days to see how she's doing.

Well, after reading all the comments suggesting helping your hen vomit if she has sour crop, I gave it a try with one of my hens who has been lethargic and has a watery large crop. I went to several sites to be sure I did it correctly. I distended her head and tipped her at a 60 degree angle and only tipped her very briefly. Whoosh alot came out- but then, even tho I had righted her, she inhaled some. Now she is most likely going to die- her breathing is labored. I'm sad that I tried this and have now since read a number of articles by people advising against this for this very reason. It may work some of the time, but I'm sticking to just yogurt and probiotics and massage if it ever happens again. Here is a link to a site talking about this also. I'm not saying it doesnt work, when it works, I'm just saying it was the worse thing I could have done for my hen. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/farmlife/msg0911264215760.html

Never make them vomit. I just killed my hen by handling her incorrectly when she had sour crop. Just a slight tilt and she threw up and aspirated it into her lungs.

DO NOT make them vomit.

Sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you have stressed the importance of this. So many people recommend this dangerous procedure. Crop issues are very hard to cure, but this is a good way to kill a chicken.

Hello. Just an update.
My hen that aspirated when I tilted her to get her to vomit...
Well, the first night I thought she'd be dead by morning. She was wheezing and groaning, it was horrible. Plus her crop had refilled with liquid by morning anyway. But by morning her wheezing and groaning was much less, which gave me hope. So I made a brew of Echinacea tea with golden seal powder mixed in. Then I let it steep with crushed fresh garlic. and then added good quality yogurt to boot. I was feeling poorly myself, so both my hen and I drank this concoction 3 times a day for the next 5 days. (I had to use an eye dropper and drip it into her mouth to get her to drink it, but I didnt mind drinking it) Aside from this brew she didnt want to eat anything or drink anything, and I let her do as she pleased, despite the weight loss. However, I also would manipulate her crop. just very gently massaging it at the base or as close to the base as I could, where I figured it entered the gizzard. Sometimes massaging it would release trapped air, which seemed to make her happy. It also made me happy because there was no danger of more aspiration. Anyway, not eating or drinking did result in gradually the crop getting smaller. Or maybe my massaging helped. Anyway, after about 5 days I started forcing yogurt into her mouth and also baby food. She still wouldnt eat on her own. However, after about 8 days she showed interest in lettuce. So I let her have lettuce. She also wanted bread, and I know people say not to give them bread, but I just really wanted her to eat. So I let her have small portions of bread. She ate only lettuce and bread for about another week. Then suddenly she was eating seeds and corn and all the normal stuff again. Yay! She now seems fully recovered and is back in the coop with the other girls. When she aspirated I thought it was the end for her. But, she came back. Echinacea, golden seal, garlic and yogurt I think really helped. Anyway, surprise happy ending!! And I'm going to look at the links a few of you posted. Thank you for your support!!!

Your success came from your alternative treatments VS making her vomit :) Glad it worked out for you.
