My 5 mo.old roo starts crowing about six. He crows intermittently until I sit up in bed and start to get up. He then waits patiently for up to 20 minutes while I get dressed, etc. It's about 35 feet from the coop to the house, then another 20 feet to my room. Anybody else have chickens with super hearing?

How much noise do you make in the morning? JK

I can be 200 feet away from my chickens - speak (not yell) one of the chicken's names and they will all come running. But no walls

- so I am not sure thru the house/coop walls.

I have read that dogs can hear a heart beat from 5 feet way.

lol Just average stand up, kick on shoes, get dressed, etc. I don't even make coffee or breakfast so he isn't smelling anything.
The dog heartbeat thing is interesting. Maybe that's another way they pick up on someone's mood.

oh they have keen sense of hearing!!!! Mine are all the way at the back of the property... which would be about 3-4 outside pool areas....and man Im outside and there running up the gate, waiting on me...and there seeing:

avian eye is similar to a vertebrate eyes...its the finest ocular organ. they can focus with in a range of 20 diopters TWICE that of a 20yr old human!!! color vision peaks in the orange-red portion of the spectrum and they have both MONOCULAR AND BINOCULAR VISION WITH A 300 DEGREE FIELD OF VIEW...wish I had that....

They hear quite well. When I go out the back door they start squawking and running to the gate of their run for treats.

It's almost as bad as sad puppy dog eyes looking at you.

Who needs CHICKENS to get them up in the morning. I have two DOGS that WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE UNTIL I GET UP IN THE MORNING!!!!!
They start at 5:30.....
Then, they won't leave me alone until everybody ELSE is fed.

My coop is about 40 feet away and I know my chickens hear me when I get up and move around. They stop making noise and then give me about 2 minutes to let them out before yelling at me some more. SPOILED! Also, hubby has a loud diesel truck and they hear him coming down the street and they run to the gate, very patiently awaiting their dad to get home with treats!

When mine are out of the coop they hear me coming and run for the gate--- if they are inside and hear me open the gate they all form a mosh pit in front of the pop door and when I open it they practically fall out on top of one another--- they never seem to hurt each other, amazingly!
