How/where do you store your feed?

Hi mommybilly3 and welcome to BYC! I think you need to post your question as a new topic to get the replies you're looking for. I'd give you an answer if I could, but I haven't raised chicks, sorry. I've seen the topic discussed in several older posts, so if you do a search I'm sure you'd find answer that way too.

I store my grain in a very large trash barrel, the kind with attached lid. Holds 200 # of grain. We are looking into building a grain silo. The price for bulk is about 30% less than bagged feed!

Forgot to include that these are stored in an old 1970's kingston horse trailer.

There is a drum place not far from here (in Hot Springs, AR) and I know a guy who knows a guy.....that kind of thing. We got like 4 drums from them. I think they are refurbished, as they are painted on the inside. They did not have any noticeable odors from the previous contents OR from the paint, so I figured it was safe for dry storage. Sometimes ya gotta be careful about what they used to hold. Very nice drums. The lid clamp/ring is a bit of a PITA to me, I think it's warped a little. They get REALLY hot in the sun!

I have a plastic 55gal drum that I picked up for $2, but it just has the two bungholes in the top, impossible to use for feed. I was gonna use it for water, but turns out somebody attempted to cut the whole top off, but only about 1/4 of the way around, so it won't hold water anymore and I still can't use it for feed

Maybe someday I'll finish cutting the top off and use it for something.

Sometimes you can pick them up on Craigslist and sometimes you can find a drum refurbishing place in your area. There is a drum refurbishing company called DrumCo online that will ship UPS, decent prices I think (for online) and you can get food grade that used to have juice or edibles stored in them. Nice ones can get a tad expensive, but sometimes you get lucky.

I got a plastic garbage bin with a snap on lid from BIG W. Cost me $10.
Probably only useful in Australia though where the biggest thing that tries to break into it is a rat lol

Rodents will chew through plastic, wood and about anything else as you obviously already know. I keep mine in the shed in steel garbage cans with locking lids.

My bags of feed also don't completely fit into my bin, so I put the surplus in a plastic bag inside an old mouse cage! Works well! lol
