How / why should I put down my sick chicken?

I did a lot of internet searching, and soul searching, on this topic when my chicken Ida got sick. Especially when she made it through the initial crisis and became a long-term / permanently disabled chicken. Very grateful to the community here at backyard chickens and other forums online for helping me think through this decision. In the end, I wrote a very short story about Ida's illness and what we did about it. Posting that here for anyone who might find it helpful.
