Howdy from East of Sacramento

I grew up on a ranch with about every farm animal there is- & German Shepherds. I wouldn't even worry about them with the birds. They're more likely going to protect your flock, which is an extension of your family, than harm them. For choice of which breed, I would get any breed that's a good layer. Ameraucanas (sp?) or any of the "Easter eggers" are very popular & easy to find at your local feed supply store or online poultry suppliers & boy do they lay! You are very lucky to live in California where you can grow just about anything, even with the heat. Good luck- & the hardest thing you're going to deal with in birds is losses, with some people they don't have the heart for it, & they get too emotionally upset when a chick or chicks "go", which is bound to happen- just one thing to be prepared for is all. Other than that birds are great fun, excellent learning for the young ones, & not sure if you've ever had any but boy their waste products smell horrible and can be real dirty. Invest in a great big bag of lime, learn how to use it (keeps flies away) and make lime paint, and chicken waste is fabulous fertilizer.

i'm 83 years old I also grew up on a dairy farm, had all kind of animals ,my favorite chickens are the cochin banties ,and the buff offenton ,the cochin banties will follow me all over, and catch lots of bugs ,this is just a hobby for a old man, have one rooster and 14 hens .they lay lots of eggs ,that I give lots to my kids . I use pine shavings and sprinkle the floor with lice powder every time I clean the coop and that is often, my chickens have a half acre to run on all into grass ,with high wooden fence all a round it ,only problem I have is with chicken hawks they killed all my pigeons and three of my littler banties ,so I keep a eye out for them stay safe Geno 9129
