No raw meat. It's hard to digest anyway. Besides the raw meat was outside and probably got tainted. Oh did they eat the rest after you took out the meat?
Just using a little of my common sense.
For the most part I'm pretty liberal with my chickens... unless it is something like syrofoam, if they eat it I'll let them.
In this case they didn't seem interested in any of it, so it all went into the compost bins since it was getting ripe sitting in the sun. I expect the BSF larvae to make quick work of the meat, and if not it will be pulled out and tossed in the garbage from whence it came.
I couldn't help myself... I went outside to take a peek at the bin with the meat on top. I pulled back the top layer and was surprised there wasn't music and a disco ball because there were a TON of grubs having a PARTAY!
Here is what I just emailed my friend who is the Black Soldier Fly expert:
So, I dumped all that food waste into my compost bin. I put all the meat into the one that already had a TON of BSFLs in there. Well, I went out today and there are zillions of tiny larvae, but Im not sure if they are housefly larvae or not. I do see a ton of houseflies around the compost bin and I know that the BSFLs are working on the food too.
Any ideas on:
1) How I can tell what kind they are
2) What will happen if an army of housefly maggots run into an army of BSFLs?
I dont want to take the food away from the BSFLs, but I cant stand the thought of raising a zillion more houseflies.
I know BSFLs excreet something that houseflies don't like, but I think the lure of all the fresh meat, etc. was too much for them to resist.
For sure the ones last night and this morning were BSFLs... they were way too huge for fly larvae / maggots. The ones this evening sprouted out of nowhere and are all over. Emily went out for a closer look and she's pretty convinced they are housefly larvae, so now I've got to decide what to do next.
