Huge, bloody mass under wing. Please help! Going out of town tonight!

Ok important question first... The Pen Pro G or whatever its called is meant for injection into muscle only. Is there harm in me doing it under her skin? I have a hard time doing it in her breast, have been unsucessful and now not very confident doing so.

Alrighty, so here is the run down-

Possibilities: mass, neoplasia, granuloma, cyst

most likely a tumor. Recommended removing it and testing it. 6cm diameter, circular. Covered in blukote so she couldnt comment much on the color/ulceration but skin is not intact over the mass. Report says "I can get under the mass and it does not feel attached. Mass is solid/firm"

Everything else looks great.

She priced the removal at $800. (800! WTH!!!) And I obviously teared up and said there is noooo way. I mentioned that its best to just put her to sleep because I cant spend that much. She said that would be a premature decision since she is acting completely normal.

What to expect:

If cancerous- A couple of weeks to a couple of months. If not, a couple of months or if it doesnt grow at all- perhaps a couple years. If it is caused from a foreign object, it could possibly shrink down but it is most likely a tumor.

She suggests I watch to see if it grows.... thinks it would not be good if it gets bigger because its quite large at this point and would get painful if it increases in size. I need to watch closely if she loses weight or if her flock mate starts attacking her and then itll be time.

Wil continue antibiotic injections since wound is open for a few days

What are your guys thoughts on all this? What would you do? Anything differently?

Is the $800 the price for removing AND testing the lump? Because maybe one could dicker. "How much if we don't bother to test it?" "How much if I serve as your unpaid assistant during the procedure?" "How much if my friend videotapes it and you get to keep the video for educational purposes?"

I would ask if they could call in a prescription for a good oral antibiotic at no extra charge. Then I would treat her to hopefully get it healed. I would try to get another hen since she may become weak (or hopefully not) and need to be put down. Penicillin should only be given into the muscle. Some other people may tell you otherwise, but that is wrong. Actually I think giving it into the muscle 1/2 inch at a perpendicular angle is easier than giving it at an angle under neath the skin. Good luck to you.

I tried it again about a half hour ago but I think I still didnt get it into the muscle because I saw the liquid under her skin after I put it in. I can try better tomorrow getting deeper but Im nervous I am going to go too deep but Ill just make sure to really angle it in shallow.

What would be the best antibiotic to give her orally? Baytril? Would that be even better than penicillin in her muscle?

Thanks again

I had to bring her to the city to be seen which is where I live until I can bring her home on my day off Thursday. Any advice on keeping her quiet inside my apartment :/ I really thought the vet would advice her to be put down so I wasnt expecting this. I am nervous she will make a lot of noise. Keep her in a covered, dark crate... will she be quiet during the day while im working?

What size and length needle are you using? It's difficult to keep chickens quiet if they are chatty. A lot of communities ban roosters, but many people don't realize how noisy hens can be, especially after laying. Maybe just sweet-talk your neighbors, or have a friend check on her. Try practicing giving a shot into an orange or lemon. Just go straight in about 5/8 of an inch. In a person it would be an inch.

It is a 21, 1 incher. I always think I have a really good idea of it... reading articles, checking it out on here, even watched a you tube video. Then I do it and ... yeah... no good. haha. I WILL get it tomorrow. Just have to be brave and do it deeper.

Vet called in a prescription for bactrim 1.2 ml for 10 days. Wanted to do ciprofloxacin but pharmacy here unable to do so since it's a danger for human consumption .

Thoughts ?

Bactrim ok or should I try penicllin again?

It's also called SMZ/TMP and it's a very good antibiotic!
