I totally agree wth that. I take good care of my birds, WHEN I get them! I'm only able to order a small amount of chickens. That's where the small order hatcharies come in. I order so little, many hatcharies don't do this. If they close, I'm out of luck. And then I don't get chicks for a whole other year, at least. Some of us just aren't able to 1. hatch birds here, 2. keep all roos (or don't have the hearts to dispose of them), and 3. have so many! This is horrible!

However, the other stuff I can agree with.

I will say. postal employees are not perfect, but they are not as bad as many would have you believe. this is more a political action than anything.

You can pretty much guarantee the hatcheries and the major poultry companies are watching and lobbying. Are there changes which should be made in the industry - probably. Does it really need to go to the least common denominator like most laws do by banning the shipping of critters, No.

its just another way for "them" to get another foot in the door..if they get their way NONE OF US will have animals AT ALL,including your dogs and cats..this is a very real threat people..time to start calling and writing your senators,I have been for several years,I am sure they are sick of hearing from me,but thats what they are there for,to hear our side also, not just the big high paid lobbyist..most slaughter plants are very human, but we only hear about the few crual incidents,we never see the humane side on the news..we need to start fighting for our rights before we dont have any to fight for...

I think there is room for improvement on the side of the hatchery and definitely on the side of the postal agency.

I can say that because like most here I have bought chicks and eggs via the mail. I've seen a lot of damage that could have been prevented.

just my opinion....

we all agree about that room for improvement, but there are better ways to address that then stopping shipping totally..forcing people out of work, isnt the way to go about it.

It's unfortunate that they attached the shipping of animals to the bill. The other portions are very worthwhile. Humane slaughter laws SHOULD apply to poultry. There is no excuse for the suffering that animals go through in the name of profit. What's even worse is how millions of people sit back and don't care as long as they get the food on their table. At least the organization is trying to do something about it.

Perhaps what should be done is that reasonable, responsible animal lovers should write to the organization and their representatives asking that the bill be amended to protect poultry under the humane slaughter provision but to allow shipping of animals to remain legal with reasonable safeguards in place.

As for hunting on wildlife refuges-that should be a no-brainer. Look up the definition of a refuge. Hunting does not belong in refuges or national parks. That is not what they were set up for. There are other places for that.

#1 chicks are considered livestock on most all counts, so this will not fly.

#2 give the post office a break, the people actually losing your shipment of chicks or eggs is FED EX not post office employees. FED EX is the air shipper now for the post office. If the plane is full of FED EX boxes, then all USPS shipments will have to wait, this includes lives. FED EX will not track USPS shipments including lives, so once a live gets put on a plane and is in FED EXs hands there is no telling where it is until it arrives at a USPS facility to be scanned again. A box of chicks could potentially go across the US and back in two days and no one would be the wiser.

#3 back away from my farm
