Ch.8

We walked over to the phone, and dialed 911.
"911, what is your emergency?"
I looked at Amy, wondering what to say.
She looked at me, and then back at the phone, “Hello? Um, someone broke into my house yesterday while my friend was over, and I hid in the closet, and he left."
"Why didn't you call yesterday?'' he asked us.
I spoke up, “We were more interested in getting back to my house where we'd be safe, rather than wait for him to come back while we're calling you."
The operator paused, "are you the girl who called about the man who broke into your Friend's house a few days ago?
“Yes, I am."
''Well, he's still in jail, he couldn't have broken in. Is this a joke?"
"No, it's not!" she said, "Some man broke In, and said something about getting revenge or something for his brother."
"Ma'am, are your parents home?"
"Not yet, but they will be soon, why?"
I knew exactly why, "They're not here, but she has been staying with me, sir.
"Ok, I need to know, when will they be back?"
"Sometime today."
"Ok, good....How exactly did this man get into your house?"
"He pried the back door open because we wouldn't open the front one."
"Pried it open with what?"
"A crowbar."
"Do you have access to the crowbar right now."
"Yes, I ..... shot it out of his hand."
"You shot it out of his... -- With what!?”
"I grabbed her dad's gun before he got inside, and we hid in her room."
"How did you manage to get the crowbar from hiding?"
"Well, I was hiding in the closet, and was looking out the slits of the door, and Amy was under the bed.
The man came in and was verbally threatening us, and he was about to look under the bed."
Amy popped into the conversation, "She came out of the closet, and pointed the gun at him and scared him away."
"So that's when you shot the crowbar out of his hand?"
"No, I sacred him out the back door, and to make sure he wouldn't come back soon, I shot the crowbar out of his hand."
"Oh, ok."
"When he ran away, I picked up the cr-"
Suddenly, I heard the sound of glass shattering.
"Shiz!" I mumbled, jumping up and grabbing Amy.
"Get down," I hid her behind the couch, "And stay down!"
Another shot fired, but no glass shattered. He was inside!
I crawled around the side of the couch and looked in the direction of the gunman. A shot fired and a bullet whizzed by me.
I pulled back behind the couch, ducking close to the ground.
Another shot, the sound of the couch tearing above me where, if I hadn't ducked, my head would've been.
The man, I realized, was moving toward the front of the couch.
He'd seen me pull down Amy!
I crawled back around and yanked Amy around to my side of the couch.
The man was close but he couldn't see us.
I reached toward the handle, and pulled open the drawer, reaching in, and finding a box of bullets.
I put the bullets into my pocket, and reached back into the drawer for the gun.
The papers inside the drawer rustled quietly as I fingered through it, desperately trying to find the gun.
My fingers found the handle, and I grabbed it and pulled it out.
The man's footsteps were extremely close.
"Amy, crawl around to the back of other couch and when I distract this guy, run to that tree house we made in the woods when we were kids."
She knew that I wouldn't take "No" for an answer, and did as I said.
Another shot hit the couch, and I realized that the shots hadn't made much noise. He had silenced the gun!
The distant cries of police sirens could be heard, and I got up, and ran into the bathroom, locking the door behind me.
I heard the sound of the man jiggling the handle.
I was right next to the window, and I opened it, and jumped out.
Looking through the trees, I glimpsed the running legs of Amy and started to run.
The sound of metal hitting metal rang out behind me. The man had shot the handle to the bathroom door.
I sped up, and went as the crow flies toward Amy.
She sped up, and I called her name. She slowed back down, and turned, climbing up to the tree house, which was hidden behind branches, vines, and leaves
Looking up, I could barely see it. Amy could barely get into it, and the rope we climbed up with was beginning to break which just made me even more nervous.
