hunting

It doesn't take much to get into duck hunting. You could walk that creek with shotgun in hand and jump up some woodies, as long as you can recover downed bird's.

I started when I was 14, (many year's ago) with 3 decoy's and a single shot shotgun. The rest is history. Experience is the best teacher, which is why I can be a successful duck hunter today.

I love deer hunting, but nothing compare's to a flock coming in to your calling and decoy's with feet down. The backdrop of wetland's in autumn is a big reason I go as well.

I've done a lot of hunting, but never duck hunting. My problem is I can only identify two kinds of ducks.

Sitting and flying.

Thanks! I'm not, I mixed it all myself. About 5 gallons of water, 2 pounds uniodized salt, 1 cup (8oz) diluted sulphuric acid. That's what it's in now; I'll be taking it out tomorrow to finish fleshing it (decided to wait an extra day just to make sure) and then mixing another 2 pounds of salt and 1 cup acid back into the original mixture. I've heard good things about that method, and I've never really liked buying "kits" without knowing what's in them, lol. So far so good though--flesh has turned gray and the membrane appears to be peeling back from the skin somewhat, as I've been told it should do. Fingers crossed though!

Wow!Sorry to tell you that is a recipe for disaster, sulphuric acid is very dangerous stuff so be very careful when handling it.I have heard of this before and it's nothing more than a acid tan,not a true tan at all.All the acid does is remove the untannable protiens in the skin so a tan can attach it's self to the skin fibers, the untannable protiens need to be replaced by a true tan or Your skin will shrink and be stiff as a board. You need to ad a tanning agent to your mix(EZ tan 100 or lutan f are 2 of the best),then it has to be oiled with a good tanning oil, thats what makes the finished skin soft and stretchy. If you would like i have enough tanning agent(lutan f)and oil(rittels super soft) that i could send you for the cost of shipping,$4-$5.I used to tan hides for a living but went out of business and have some left over supplies, let me know if you want them.

Wow!!! Thank you SO MUCH for telling me!!! I'd read that an acid tan with the proper working during the drying process and a good oiling would be the same as a normal tan, and I figured that since I found the same information in 3-4ish different places which seemed to be reliable sources it would be reliable, accurate information. Thank you SOO much!!! I've done a bit more research since seeing this post, and found that one of my sources was only inaccurate in saying that acid could be used as a substitute for regular tanning...two recipes were listed, but it seems like it should say "and" rather than "or".

Would aluminum sulfate mixed with water and uniodized salt be an acceptable tanning solution? I can easily get it at a hardware store down the road, and don't want to inconvenience you by having you send me things. I've also heard of chrome tanning, which I should be able to get ahold of as well, but I've also heard that chrome tanning can result in a very brittle "blueish" hide. Is this true? Additionally I've heard of using 'alum'--potassium alum, which I've never really seen before...what would you suggest? I really do prefer doing things as hands-on as possible, so I do like the idea of mixing everything myself, lol.

About the acid, yes, I know it's dangerous.

I work using thick rubber gloves in thick plastic or glass containers/measuring cups, and I always wear my protective goggles while working with any of it, and have been doing so every time I open the (sealed) container to stir it obsessively 3-5 times daily, lol. I've been practicing safe mixing techniques such as running the acid down the side of the container to prevent splashing while adding the acid to the water, and of course know not to add water to acid to prevent spontaneous boiling.

I do appreciate the warnings though, it's very sweet of you!

Again, thank you very much for your help, I really, really appreciate it!!

I just found this thread. I'm mostly a bear hunter, but I'll take a deer if I come across one during season. My husband also likes to hunt elk, and I love to eat them, so that works out well for us. We actually met while hunting. He was rather impressed that I'd taken a deer by myself and got it loaded, and I just wanted someone to hold the camera for the picture. My son took his first bear this last season.

I've been running bear with some houndsmen friends for 7 or 8 years now. They finally got me talked into running hounds myself, and I got my first three puppies to train this week.

My infant hound pack (well, two of them. You try getting puppies to hold still for pictures!):

I'm a lady hunter, too. I have utmost respect and love for the animals that provide for us. A great day hunting for me is any day in the woods... the luck of bringing something home is just a bonus. It's nice to meet you all!

It starts here too, next weekend I think in our earliest zone.

But I'm tuning up dogs. After years of running with houndsmen, I finally have my own pack. Of course, three of them are puppies, but it's a start. My husband gave me a rig box for the truck for my birthday, and has been patiently fixing up kennels for me. It's going to be a fun year!
