I read of one person who wrapped each of their chickens in newspaper, taped them, and packed them in the car, I assume to take with theim. I think that's just about as stressful for the birds as staying home and weathering the storm...but at least they were trying to do something. I know a lot of people can't or won't do anything besides try to save themselves. Praying for all you in Florida who have animals...and all you in Texas who weathered the storm. God bless you all.

I,m sorry, know this is going to sound heartless, but I am not worried about the chickens in Key West at all. These are semi-feral birds that have been living by their wits all their lives. Though some deaths will probably occur due to the storm, free-ranging birds die in dozens of ways all the time, yet the flock lives on. It's called survival of the fittest - a rather brutal but effective means of keeping a gene pool strong.

You're not worried because you're not a chicken and they don't belong to you. All animals including wild ones, are terrified right now...trust me. They can feel the pressure dropping and hear the storm coming. "survival of the fittest"?. Well, that's true for people too..but that doesn't mean we don't worry and feel for all people involved. I feel for the wild animals and birds, the ones migrating to or through that devastation, the abandoned pets, and zoo animals. I will pray for them all. And, of course, the people victims also.

I don't know what part of Florida you are in, but it sounds as though you are not evacuating. Please keep yourself and family safe as possible. Unfortunately, the safety of your animals is secondary.
We have borrowed roofing from critters to board our windows with HD metal roofing. Tuff decision but had to.
