If it stays just offshore one issue as it will not lose strength as it would if the eye goes over land.

It's a very dynamic system; that's why these things are so hard to pin down. Any interaction with land has some impact, it's hard to predict how much. Shear is coming into play for the next day or so; so a delayed landfall might mean lower wind speed at that time. But as you said, the highest wind speeds are usually found to the northeast of the center, and that's the part driving up the coast. Irma's a big storm; hurricane force winds extend quite a ways out from the eye. Any way you look at it, she's going to make a very big mess all along the western side of Florida, and well inland.

Praying for the safety of all in harm's way.

The quote is actually, "Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night." (Bette Davis, "All About Eve.)

Apt either way...
YES!! That is it verbatim, thank you. Sometimes a little levity, and laughter helps us all from becoming depressed with all this going on. It seems like everywhere, someone is dealing with a natural disester. Even if it's friends or family it can be hard. best wishes and good luck to all.

Exactly, @barred2rock
The video of Key West was LOUD with the wind. Wires were whipping back and forth, power went off twice while I was watching. Last time it didn't come back on and don't know if it did, but kinda doubt it.

Saw Miami live camera on CNN earlier. Like I said, it's not going to be pretty.

FL governor told the people who stayed behind in the Keys, that if they didn't leave, there would be no one coming to rescue them, that it would be impossible. I would imagine the road that runs down just over the water might not even be there once Irma goes through.

Edit: Needless to say, the rain was pouring down. A poor dog was walking up the street.
Weather channel saying highway one is underwater in southern Florida, hate to see people just leave pets loose on the streets in something like this. It happened a lot in Katrina, it was so sad to come back a month later and find these poor animals scared and fending for themselves. We had lots of animal rescue groups come in and rescue as many as they could. Wish this had been a lesson learned from Katrina!

For who?
Anywhere it hits land is going to be a disaster.

If it stays off the coast, the warm water can intensify the strength of the hurricane making it more of a threat. The strongest part of the hurricane is the 12-to-3 o'clock quadrant (if you look at the hurricane as the face of a clock) so if it doesn't hit the mainland and strafes the coast, it'll be bad for everyone along that coast -- a worse scenario than if the storm had slid up the east coast of the peninsula.

When the weatherman talks about the hurricane 'hitting' an area, he's usually talking about the eye of the storm. As you can see from that radar image pulled about 20 minutes ago, the eye is off the coast, it hasn't 'hit' the mainland yet, but the entire southern tip of the state is in the strongest quadrant of the storm.

Drinking my am coffee watching the news, a beautiful dawn and wishing I could change the hurricane area to this beautiful morning.

These crazy reporters doing the annoying Geraldo act during storms. Apparently some stayed in the keys and the eyewall is about 20 miles away. Sorry to hear that Irma slowed which will cause additional damage and higher storm surge. Hoping all of you who stayed and your critters stay safe.

Wish I could volunteer to come help but since working and a houseful of critters it is not an option.
I know how you feel, have been trying to figure out if I could find a way to bring mature teenage girls to Houston to help gut houses for those in need. They build houses in South America in the summers. Some really tough girls who want to be of help. My daughter belongs to this club at her school. (yes, it's a real club, designed to help people in need.)

So true. Skirting the coast would just put the entire western half of the state from the middle to the coast in the highest wind/flood area as well. My personal worry is for Naples. My granddaughter is there.
Adding your granddaughter to the prayer list. Hope she is okay, let us know how she fairs. In the mean time know we are all thinking of and praying for both of you.

I saw a news story out of Palm Beach that said that over 50 animals had been collected from homes that had been evacuated, many of them simply left tethered to trees in the yard. Turning an animal loose to fend for itself is bad enough, but leaving it tied up like that is unspeakable!

Agreed, some were actually left in pet crates sitting in yards! So sad. What are those people thinking? We have seen that in the flash flooding here in the KC area as well, some people risking their lives to save some of those animals.
