It looks something like this...but larger.
This is a random google picture...
I don't want to walk the big ten steps to dig it out of the cabinet to take a picture of it.

Ok...I'm old enough to remember Montgomery Wards and we still have a J.C. Penny at the Christiana Mall....but I remember Woolworth's and National 5&10 - not familiar with a Murphy's.
I worked at one - decades ago. They and Woolsworth's were comtempary rivals.

From Wikipedia
"
G.C. Murphy was a chain of five and dime or variety stores in the United Statesfrom 1906 into the 1990s. By 1976, the G.C. Murphy Company had grown to 529 stores.

In April 1985, the company was acquired by Ames Department Stores Inc. Ames rebranded many of the larger "Murphy's Mart" stores. In 1989, Ames decided to sell the variety stores (while retaining the former Murphy's Mart), and sold the division to the McCrory's chain. McCrory's rebranded some and closed others. The McCrory's chain filed for bankruptcy in 1992, closed many of their stores (including former G.C. Murphy's outlets) in 1997, and ceased its remaining operations in 2002."

JC Penny has closed over 138 stores nationwide. Macy's has also closed a bunch of stores, as has K-Mart and others. So far, there is at least one of each in Hagerstown, MD, but I don't believe they have the clientele they used to have.

Far as I know, there are none in Cumberland, MD

Houston Map.
There is a big circle closer to the middle....that is the 610 Freeway.
You just don't live many places inside this freeway.

The next big circle is the Beltway 8 aka Tollway....it's ok to live in some areasin-between the 610 circle and the Beltway 8 circle.

It used to be more country-fied to live outside of the Beltway 8 circle..not anymore.

Notice on the left side of the map they have started building a new circle....the 99 'circle'

I live outside of the 8 circle.

Cops at the door is insane! The only time we have cops at any stores nearby are on black Friday!

You people with scary Walmarts must be where all the "people of Walmart" pictures are taken lol.
Only place I lived that had cops everywhere, was in Jax Florida. My kids went to schools behind 12 foot fences and a police station inside. At one point, my then 14 year old son, 5'11 and 200 lbs, was attacked by 15 6-7 yr olds who tried to steal his trombone. They did get his watch. The cop stood by 10 feet away and did nothing.

My son asked me, "Mom, what could I do? All I could do was shake them off - I couldn't hit them or anything. They were LITTLE kids!"

There are 8 Walmarts within 8 miles of my house.

that would scare me

I believe the Target nearest to me is pretty much on the level of Penny's, Montgomery Wards, and Murphy's Five & Dime.
