They are going to shut down the nuclear power plants causing rolling black outs.

That's probably a good idea. Don't want a Fukushima repeat.

Hurricane question. What do I leave open vs shut door/window wise for my chickens? I don't want the roof to blow off...I don't want my birds to get blasted by wind or rain. Hubby is worried the roof will blow off unles we leave it wide open.

We are high and dry, non evac zone In St Augustine FL. My stick built shed is 20'X12' with a cement floor, tin roof, 4x4 posts and t1-11 siding. It has openings on every side, and two sets of stall doors in the front. The other window openings are 3'x5'. No glass. All the openings can be securely shut allowing no air flow or all left open or any combo. The openings are covered with hardware cloth (1/4"1/4"wire).

Does anybody have experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Hubby is worried the roof will blow off unles we leave it wide open.

That doesn't make sense. I think that comes from the myth if you open windows in a tornado, it will prevent the roof from being blown off. Windows need to closed during a hurricane.

Personally I agree! Those poor bids in a good building getting all that wind. I would like to close the windward sides of the building. It seems like an old wives tale to me.

Ok I looked it up. It only talks about homes, but this is a total myth. Only air that's allowed in can suck a roof off. sorry all hubby is making me nuts!

DON'T know how many chicks u got but would bring them in & put in bathtub or comer laundry room or closet w/ lost of news paper don't leave them out if u can bring them in,. if u have no choice batten down all hatches board thing up but eave a couple windows wedged open put a stick close window on it & nail window down. this gives them air but not debris they can go w/out don't forget to double sand bag garage door if u got also other places where water can get in. wind will drive water into the smallest cracks so plug them. food or water couple of days if they been well fed so no worries there,

don't try to fix till wind dies another piece could of whatever could hit u making repairs. build u a fort in solid room and ride it out. good luck & we'll talk to u & ur chicks after GBA

oh other post rite on tornados & open windows don't work anyway as if twister that close ur roof is gone anyway..know from experience. close windows and stay away from them GBA
