Husband just died

He did call last night and we talked for quite a while. He brought up his criminal record without any prompting from me, although he did say that he doesn't drink (and an OWI proves otherwise), but still. He was fun to talk to, VERY direct about many things. I don't get offended by that but some things did catch me off guard.

He also said that he substitute teaches. So ... I know in Michigan they have to go through background checks. Do they have to in WI? Are the checks pretty stringent?

Yup. Long distance friend. Seeing him at rides with lots of witnesses too.

He may not drink anymore.. after he got the OWI??

Just take it slow with this guy... hes kinda shown a pattern of bad choices...just saying...
But people DO grow up and change.. so....

hard to find one without something in the courts.

Really?!? You must know some pretty strange people. Of the probably hundreds of people that I know extremely well, I can think of only one who has had brushes with the courts--and I pray every night that my family member divorces him this time! In my circles "normal" people don't get themselves involved with courts or law enforcement.

FWIW

OP

The state of Wisconsin requires that substitute teachers hold a substitute teaching permit. In order to be eligible to become a substitute teacher in Wisconsin, an applicant must have a Bachelor's degree. Prospective substitutes that have a Bachelor's degree in teaching are not required to be licensed. To obtain a job as a substitute teacher in Wisconsin, an applicant must first contact the school district where they would like to work. After completing an interview, the school district will provide the prospective substitute with a Teacher Permit application. The applicant must have the sponsorship of a school district in order to get a permit. In Wisconsin, substitutes will need to take a substitute training class. Necessary documents will include a college transcript, proof that a training class has been completed and in some cases, a fingerprint card. A background check is also required for substitute teachers.http://dpi.wi.gov/tepdl/fqlsub.html

Nothing on his record indicates he would harm a child so he would pass (my best guess).

If having a few court appreances would bar you from the job I doubt they would have enough licensed teachers let alone sustitutes. I did not see that he had served jail time for anything listed.

Wisconsin has a web site with just about all court proceedings listed on it; you can check him out there and get all the details. Just look up circuit court of WI.

Well, he **says** he is a substitute teacher. I would reccomend a bit of extra caution from the OP since she does have a small child involved. He denies being a drinker and yet he has a DWI on his record. Maybe he quit.....kinda have to wait and see. I don't have to live in Wisconsin to know that not everyone there is an alcoholic. That is simply unbelievable.

I don't know the OP, but for some reason I have been following this thread and really hoping for a brighter and better future for her with love and companionship from a nice man.....when she is ready. She deserves it and I think she can do better then a guy with a criminal record.

I have had my brushes with the law in the past and I would be sad to think that someone would feel they were "stooping" to be with me. People make mistakes. People change. I haven't had a drink in 23 years. Should I still be kept away from people's children for things I did 25 years ago? I am surprised at how judgemental some of you are. Perhaps none of you have ever made any mistakes. How fortunate for you/

I had a long term relationship with a man that drank. He was never a drunk but he got a DWI.

He hated that DWI so much he never had another drink. I would be very surprised if changed back to drinking. Lots of ppl quit drinking for whatever the reason.
