I’ve decided to get Runner ducks any advice for me?

I bought that wooden duck at a yard sale a couple of years ago (before I ever knew what an Indian runner was lol) I’ve had I sitting on my counter ever since and now I plan on having real runners (who woulda thunk ittt )

That is too funny! This is our first runner duck as well about 10 years ago, long before ever thinking about owning ducks. Also purchased at a yard sale
We now have 4 real runners who are so much fun. They are friendly, hilarious and always happy to see us.

Great! I will definitely post pictures once they arrive! Could you show pics of your runners? What’s their names?

My fawn and white is named Brendan. He breaks up fights between my ducks.

And Bill is my black runner. He's very bold and is the first to try new things.

They've actually taught my pekins a few behaviors, and encourage my lazy pekins to forage more.

That’s Pretty cool! I never thought I’d see another wooden runner Lol. Your runners are so adorable. Thank you for the pictures! I was thinking of ordering them from metzer farm and they have a breed comparison chart- Is it true that different color runners have slightly different levels of skiddish-ness? I’m speaking the breed in general; not individual personalities which I know they all have lol. I know with dog breeds- like for example the dachshund; the short hair is bred to be more of a working dog opposed to the long hair who’s supposed to be more calm and the wire hair who’s supposed to be the most feisty. I’m wondering if that applies to ducks as well. I’m a newbie to all of this; please shine some light lol. Thanks again!

This is all about trial and error. We learn as we go. If we are afraid to try something new we do not learn. If we do not learn, we do not experience the joys of duck ownership. With more eggs coming each day the cost of eggs for us has gone down to about 150$ each.

I agree; that also applies to life in general

Thank you! That’s an incredible story; I’m so glad lucky made it but I’m sorry the others didn’t I will make sure my coop & run are both safe for the ducklings.Pine shavings have been suggested to me before this forum so I’ll definitely try them out (at the very least in their brooder). I read that vinyl lock and lay flooring in the coop is good and plexiglass on the inside walls could help; what do you think? I think trial and error for each individual depending on the amount of ducks/personalities/schedules etc. seems to be the norm and I don’t doubt I’ll have to find my own way *the hard way*- probably lol and that’s okay. I just want as many tips as I can get so I can fumble a little less than if I haven’t asked for help. I’d love to see pictures of your set up. Thanks again!

He didn't put them up at night and he was free ranging them must have been traumatizing for lucky and all the ducks that didn't make it.all trial and error that's how I started I won chickens and a rabbit at a auction before the chicks had a coop or a brooder same with the rabbit but that's what got me in to my dream of farming it started it all.so glad that one nbr decided to take me to that auction bc it has changed my life forever to have a big farm!!

I know if I work hard I'll eventually get to where I can have all the animals I want.I guess thats kinda what chickens lead up to more animals.lol
