I Am An Idiot

I am not the greatest at candling either, especially the darker colored eggs.

So you are definitely NOT an idiot.

Hey Ninja - we're of an age - try it with your reading glasses on... chuckle... And hugs for good luck.

Just checking in on your hatch

Going to be first time Araucana hatch attempt soon, with shells like yours, too...

Have you tried a smaller LED flashlight? The bulb on the larger flashlight is hard to narrow down to candle an egg for me. I have 3.5 watt or lumens or whatever flashlight from walmart, it's great for the darker marans eggs, I wonder if it would work on eggs like yours?

Any update on your babies?

Tina

I got the humidity as high as I could, and placed tape over the hole I made in the one egg, after verifying that the chick inside was still alive.

STILL NO CHANGES. I double-checked, and today is actually Day 22, so that's not so bad, is it?

I upped the temp on the other incubator containing Jody's Buff Orp eggs, which are on day 12.

That's the trouble with becoming a chicken addict, now I can't wait for the next post to find out if your chick make it. Keep us posted.

Even with a surefire flashlight, the Ameraucana eggs are extremely hard to candle. I hope your little ones hatch!!!

Still nothing. How long should I wait before giving up? Today is Day 23.

ETA: At least I know that at least one was alive on Day 21, so I hadn't wrecked things yet at that point. No matter what I do, I can't get the humidity to read higher. If I press the "min/max" button on the hydrometer, it shows a "maximum" humidity of 65%, but on the regular setting, it's just reading 45%. The water channels are full.

Are you getting any moisture buildup in the incubator? They CAN hatch at 45-65%, it just may take a little longer. I had a couple of Bobwhite eggs that I had forgotten to mark when I set them... they hatched in the incubator, in the turner, at 45%.
Is it a still-air? You might quickly take out one egg and candle it to see if there is still movement, but I would wait one more day. If the trays are full, you should have plenty of humidity in there.
