So I have been feeding the hens cooked rice and food scraps.

I cannot get to the feed store because of the snow and ice.

Anyway, I have quite a few jars of peaches that I canned. There isn't anything wrong with them, they have just set around for a long time. For some reason we didn't eat them.

I have been giving them to the hens, and also the syrup they are canned in. Is there any reason that the sugary syrup would be bad for them? This is not a constant diet you understand, just a temporary dessert. I thought in this cold snap it might even be good for them.

What do you think?

Sounds like your a careing person :) Im sure they will be fine. W/O the almose perfect balance of vitamins and minerals feed has, they may stop laying eggs for you, but theyll live through it!

Do you have any bread? Or cornmeal with which to make cornbread? Do you have frozen vegetables? Oatmeal? Potatoes? How many hens do you have? No doubt they are enjoying the peaches but if you could mix it with some kind of bread or cereal then what you have will stretch longer.

YES--I have a whole bunch of potatoes! Good idea.

We should be out in a couple of days.

Unless of course another storm comes.

Don't feed potatoes; the skin is toxic to them.

Too much sugar is absolutley not good for them; better off giving grain-based products. Breakfast cereals that have no added sugar (Kix, cheeriors, chex), oatmeal, breads, etc.

Good luck getting through the cold snap....brrrrr!

I wish you well and your chickens. Sounds like you are doing every thing you can. I hope the snow dont last much longer. Although I know you have had it bad x

Wynette, are the skins toxic if cooked? Or doesn't that make any difference? I guess I could peel the potatoes and cook them.
