Okay this backs up why not to help chicks out IMOP : "Of the 21 lethal genes known to date in fowl, at least 16 are fatal to some or all homozygotes during incubation, and the other 5 exert there effects after hatching. While most lethal genes cause some abnormality that is not lethal until some of the later stages of incubation (or after hatching), there must be many others that are undetected. "sticky" embryos die during the last 4 days of incubation and about half the nakes chicks die 2 or 3 days before hatching time.

Copied from the genetics of the fowl. In further research, helped chicks with lethal genes live 10% of the time, and you really dont want this in your gene pool.

For the record, I don't think Mark is being arrogant. He feels a sense of urgency in preserving our endangered poultry breeds, and I completely understand that. It's just a different slant and/or philosophy than other folks may have. I was just saying to someone the other day that I am to a point that I don't care if I ever have another purebred chicken or a certain standard to follow. I just want to enjoy my girls and guys and the fruits of their labors, i.e, eggs, fertilizer and entertainment.

Not once have I ever heard the genetics gurus here on BYC, such as henk69, blackdotte, tadkerson and so many more, tell anyone to just sit back and leave the "projects" to the professionals. Instead, they are here, so very generously contributing their time, expertise, counseling and encouragement to literally thousands of members.

And they share their wealth of knowledge with the world writing genetics books, so that others can understand, enjoy, and yes, even participate in, their passion of genetics.

I am also guilty of seeking the expertise of those more experienced than I here on BYC (and other forums), as well as spending hundreds of dollars on their aforementioned books, as well as spending hundreds of hours reading them. Even though I will never be even close to a genetics guru, I do take my "projects" very seriously: I do my best to study not only the genetics involved, but also the breed and color standards involved.

As long as you have some background and you know what your looking for, and also your serious about it
