I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!

Also, the eggs will get bigger as time goes on. When my first batch started laying one of our bantams laid an egg the size of a marble! Now hers are more golf ball sized.

My chickens turned 1 year about a month ago. Do you think that their eggs are now as big as they will get? I have BOs, BRs, GLWs, EEs, Delawares, and one Cuckoo Maran who only lays small eggs. The others lay medium to large sized eggs.

Yes, generally the chicken will lay a certain sized egg as their usual. However, I’ve read on BYC that egg size can increase as the bird ages - I think referring to after molt when they restart to lay, the eggs may be larger than before the molt. But, may be individual to the bird. Interesting that your Maran lays small eggs. I have a few Marans (too young to lay right now), and the place I purchased them from indicated their Marans lay large to extra large eggs -they sell lots of breeds, so had a list as to which breeds laid which size egg, in general, on their website. Of course am also wondering what shade of brown they will lay!

I thought she would have larger eggs, too. But, she is pretty low in the pecking order and is very quiet and shy, so I feel the egg suits her. I've been working with her to be a little more bold. Now, when I bring out treats, she doesn't hover around the edge of the group, she comes right in the middle of everybody to get her share. She's missed out on too many mealworms, but not anymore!

Another Kiwi! You have good taste in names. :)
Thank you everyone!

I see that most of you posted yesterday, and then some today.
Well, yesterday after noon, I found my second egg!!! It was not in the nesting boxes though....in the coop right in front of the door!! Lol, funny chickens!

I think the two who laid the eggs was Cream Puff and Kiwi because they were the only ones doing the egg squat!

I have 5 hens and yes, eventually you just get to know them and you'll figure out who's doing what. I've been getting 4 to 5 eggs everyday since they started laying about 6 months ago. Word of advice, go ahead and figure out what you're going to do with all of those eggs. There's only 2 of us, so our 3 dogs are benefiting as are the neighbors and I try to find as many recipes as I can to incorporate them into.

Thank you!

I usually have a fried egg for breakfast...I'll also be sharing with others.

One other question:

Kiwi, one of the chickens who laid yesterday, did not use the nesting boxes. She laid her egg in the middle of the floor. Does that mean she will keep laying her eggs on the floor? Or will she learn about the nesting boxes?

Mine went to the box naturally, but they all shared one box. Recently I've had a broody hen who won't get out of the box, and the others will sometimes lay them in the corner of the coop (they will all lay in the same place). I've heard that you can put wooden eggs in the nest to encourage them to lay in the box. Make sure you have straw (or whatever you use) in the nesting box.
