I can't believe she said or even thinks that

I agree. A person in their sixties is not considered elderly.

My grandmother is in her late 70s. I still will not correct an elder in his/her beliefs. They believe that way for a reason, all that matters is that I behave and believe differently.

I thought that horsejody meant that her MIL was in her sixties.

DH's family uses racial slurs in their homes...NOT in mine.

They dont do it as often in their own homes since my kids started gasping when they would say them. Or saying 'Grandpa said a Baaaaaad word'. I would just sit there looking expectantly at the potty mouthed person and let them answer the kids as to why they used those words...knowing full well that they wouldnt utter a sound. And sometime, silence says it all.

My Dad comes out with some zingers too and I never hesitate to let him know that I dont want the kids to hear that kind of thing. I believe that if you arent saying that something is inappropriate then by default, you are saying that it is okay. JMHO.

OH man, it is the weirdest thing isn't it.

I have Great Grands still around (Ol' Gran and Memaw) and they always surprise me.

Gran once referred to Hispanics as 'slant eyes' which totally boggled me.... as she was discussing the immigration thing and I was like "Huh?" My dad had to explain to me what she meant... where in the WORLD did that one come from?!

Then my Memaw, she's usually not so crass with the working, but she makes sure you understand that 'her people' (that'd be the white Christian folk) are the only decent ones... ironical since she's actually a halfbreed (her word for it, American Indian)... have a feeling, but can't bring myself to ask, that her childhood was kinda rough... hence focusing on the 'white' heritage and running from the other. Which is sad to me, sad for the little girl who was hurt and sad for her children, grands, etc who don't know their own heritage.

*sigh* Maybe if EVERYONE was forced to keep chickens they'd get it... that the genes matter, but so does the hen that raises you... and it don't matter if she's red, white, green, blue or purple so long as she's your mama she's a good mama.... we could learn a lesson there... OR the pig who nursed tiger pups... or the dog who nursed kittens... heck those aren't even the same species and they can deal... really, it's quite pathetic that our species is so 'evolved' that we can't even recognize each other as being one species.

ARGH... if I don't get outta here I'ma end up posting my "Letter To Humanity" and we don't need that.

Behave the way Jesus wants you to, with LOVE.

Oddly enough Memaw thinks she IS... attending church, helping in the community, donations, working in food kitchens, etc.

I doubt folks like Mems would appreciate it much if their child/grandchild came home from school, or their friends' house or sitters' etc saying that they needed a bath because their people smelled... no, I doubt that would go over well at all...

You can't control other people's emotions, but you can lead by example... including not letting that hateful stuff... come out of your mouth particularly around impressionable children... Me personally I think leading by example is the way to go. If you pull that 'do as I say not as I do' crap (sorry, thought it was that as a kid and still do) then you just make a hypocrite of yourself and I have little to no patience or respect for those. And if your kids learn early on that you say one thing and do another then when you get to the harder years they won't bother looking to you for advice... which could be a major bummer.

OY, boy do I ramble, sorry.

As far as correcting others: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Behave the way Jesus wants you to, with LOVE.

As far as CORRECTING others, as soon as you bring religion into the mix, you are part of the problem, NOW you are saying that because I do not believe in YOUR god that I am wrong, a lesser person because I do not see the ways of the Bible and its teachings. Similaritys can be found between religious teachings, and ethnic teaching. The you can not marry outside of your religion is still rampant, But it is allowed?? Sortof a double standard here.

I remember visiting an elderly woman who lived in a nursing home. IN the room next to her was another woman who cursed and cursed. I asked a nurse-I was a teenager- why that woman was cursing so much. The nurse told me that the woman had not talked like that when she was younger but something happened to damage her brain and make her unaware of what she was saying. Of course, so many years later, I have the explanation a bit confused, but maybe your FIL is suffering from a similar problem?

I commend you for your way of handling the situation.

I agree, any sudden change in personality or behavior should be evaluated for a medical cause. Chances are pretty good that he had a TIA and suffered some brain damage, or is developing Alzheimers or some other form of dementia.

Chrisitans marry outside their faith all the time. I admit that it would be difficult to raise children when two people have radically different concepts about God but some people do manage to get around those problems.

If a Muslim said the exact same thing but using the word, Allah or a Pagan said, The Goddess or an atheist could say the greater good, I wouldn't get offended. After all, saying that the person's word for a higher consciousness wants everyone to love one another, isn't offensive no matter what you call that power.

Chickenducks didn't say a word about whose faith-or lack of faith- was wrong or superior to anyone else's. So your comment doesn't make much sense in the context of her statement.

Thats what I was thinking! Thank you for finding the words that I couldn't.
