What about living in Canada? Last week it was -49C with the windchill factor and stayed like that for a week!!!! It was brutal. But all my animals and chickens did very well. Thanks to all my heat lamps and little heaters. Today it is a balmy -9C but is supposed to go down to -21 for the weekend. I could cry.

I'm in Canada!! Edmonton to be exact. A week ago we were the second coldest place on the planet. Right now it's only minus 4 celcius (don't ask me what that is in Farenheit) and it feels like shorts weather!!

I don't have chickens yet but when I do I will be looking for ways to keep them warm when it's frosty out!
 
lol, i know exactly what you mean, I live just outside of Winnipeg! Its warming up know and was a beautiful -12C or so out today. it was definently shorts weather. I have 18 birds and they seem to be doing ok. I have one heat lamp in thier coop and am planning to get another. Does anybody know what to do about frost-bitten combs?
 
I love the change of seasons. I love the squeak of the snow at -30*F. I love the anticipation and faith in the spring. I love the lazy days of summer. And I love the scurrying in the fall and then I hibernate. You don't get that in the south.
 
I grew up in Atlanta, lived in Chicago, and now live in Western Massachusetts. I love Massachusetts, but let's face it, the weather in Atlanta is simply much better. All three places have four seasons, the difference is that in Atlanta, each season lasts three months, in Chicago and in Western Mass, summer is short, spring and fall last about a minute, and the winter goes on forever.

I know lots of people who love winter sports, hockey, snowshoeing, etc. Not me. Fortunately, my chickens seem to love cold weather. As soon as I let them out, they go running around like crazy even when it drops below 0F (that's -18 for those of you who operate in a much more sensible metric system). Then again, maybe they're just moving around a lot in order to keep warm!

In all seriousness, then they rarely take refuge in their coop, no matter how cold it gets. Snow, on the other hand, terrifies them. Even if we just have a dusting of snow, they will not venture outside.
 
PS, For those of you like JanieMarie who live in Minnesota, and points even farther north, I tip my hat to you. You guys are tough! I was in Minnesota once in July, and I about froze to death!
 
Western Canada has been brutal but it hasn't gotten much below -10C in the east this year. Mind you, we had been through 2 of the most brutal and storm winters in decades and we needed a break. We're exactly 45 N and have 4 distinct seasons, so there's always something to like! In 3 thermal layers, will probably get to five by mid-January...
