I chickened out, couldn't cull her (SEE PG 6)

would that not increase the infection danger somewhat ? I would think if the fluid was replenishing itself that quickly after a drain to recquire something permanent (so within a 24 hour period recquiring another drain) then it really is time to consider that she is indeed suffering at an intolerable level.

Okay, I've agonized over this for several days. Buffy has an appointment to cross the rainbow bridge tonight. I'm taking her to the friend's house where we got her as he's offered to do the deed. I plan to stay and keep her comfortable and not fearful till the end.

I keep dreaming about doing a hysterectomy, but I can't get a vet to call me back with a price quote. I feel moderately comfortable with doing the procedure myself, but I don't have access to anesthetics and don't want to subject her to all that pain to do it without.

AAARRRRGGGHHH!!! Okay, she's going, tonight, definitely. I can't put this off. She's uncomfortable, and I feel so bad for her. If only I had realized sooner that she was the one not laying- she was always in the nesting box! I would never have given her antibiotics in the first place, would have let her go then and there. Now she's too stubborn to give up!!

I'm very sorry to hear that you've had such heartbreak with your dear girl. You've made a very difficult but responsible decision (and selfless) after trying very hard with her. I commend you for that, and thank you.

She'll certainly be surrounded by a flock to greet her when she arrives.

Please do something nice to take care of yourself. After caring for an animal (or person) for a while, suddenly not having to causes an odd sort of stress and anxiety. Take a nice bubble bath with music playing, light a pretty scented candle in her memory, let yourself cry (we understand that it wasn't "only a chicken") to get it out, take a quiet walk, or even when you're ready go enjoy your other blessed (to have you as a mom) and healthy chickens.

Lots of hugs.
Nathalie

Funny thing, I've been so stressed with all this that all I've wanted is to take a long hot bath in my whirlpool tub- except there's a chicken in there!!

I'll clean it all out and soak tonight. Seems like an appropriate place to grieve.

(Threehorses eats her own foot...) I didn't know about the tub. /cry I'm sorry, but it is - a good place. You should have a nice bath, relax. You've so earned it.

The moaning could be because she is stressed. I can't be sure though. When we caged our chickens they go baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabababaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... Sorry I'm not a lot of help

I'm so sorry you are losing her. You did all that you could. The fluid you drained did not look like the fluid that comes out of my hen (which is clear) so I think she has had something really bad going on inside her. You are doing the right thing.
