I chickened out, couldn't cull her (SEE PG 6)

Okay, Ready to take another turn on this roller coaster with me?

My daughter and I decided to take matters into our own hands. We wanted to be together as a family tonight and grieve so we took Buffy outside to cull her ourselves. Once we set her down outside it was obvious how much life was still in her. Victoria (14) started to cry and said she didn't realize how much Buffy still seemed to want to live. SOOOO...

We performed a hysterectomy!

Currently Buffy the chicken is back in the bathtub, a little stunned, but none the worse for wear.
We removed all the cooked yolk stuff, took out the whatchamacallit (the tract that the egg goes down), rinsed her out and sewed her up. There was very minimal blood loss as far as I could see. All bleeding was stopped before I closed her up.

There were just the 2 of us and I could only get 2 pics. For some reason I can't upload them right now.

Well you get a big high five from me. I've operated on many hens, though haven't had to cut one open yet but have had to sew up many who were. They seem to really tolerate pain well, don't move around, and are eating and drinking immediately afterwards. I've never had one develop an infection or die. In fact, all have recovered almost immediately. So......I'm a big proponent of try anything first. But that's just me and I know others feel differently. But when I see the same hens running around happy go lucky later - I always feel good about my efforts at trying to save them.

Keep her in a nice, warm, safe place where she can't run around for awhile - maybe give her 1 cc of PenG daily for a few days - and I'm betting she'll be well in no time. Praying for same.

Holy Chamoly! You are one brave lady! I've worked for vets, treated my own animals for as long as I can remember, but never surgery! I'm also a nurse, and you've got me beat! WOW!

Please keep us updated! Prayers for a gal's quick recovery!!

My daughter and I were quite nauseated during the procedure, but I just really felt it needed to be done. I have had dreams for several nights about this and just couldn't get it out of my head that it was the right thing to do.

Sending get well wishes to your girl!
I to believe every living thing deserves the same amount of medical care as people get. We certainly don't kill human ladies off when they need a hysterectomy thank goodness.

Hey Jenn! I almost pm'd you to see if you would help!! Thankfully my daughter stepped up today. Buffy is sleeping, leaned up against the side of the tub, just like normal! I'm not holding my breath, though. I'll re post with an update in the morning.
