I chickened out, couldn't cull her (SEE PG 6)

crossing wings for her...
bytw> she must not have any layer feed anymore (no extra calcium) > mist the healing area with chlorhexidine.

I'd get some of that baby parrot/bird formula (is powder > you mix with water) and mix that thru some unmedicated chick starter to ensure she gets enough nutrition.
As a treat you can give some finely chopped dried cranberries. (there is a reason for this but i just woke up)

Wow I'm in AWE!!! I wouldn't know what to take out? Don't they poo and lay an egg out the same part, how did you figure it all out. I'm just so impressed.

I have a hen that alternated between internally laying and laying shell-less eggs. 3 times now she has swelled up and been so ill I was sure I was going to have to cull her, but so far she's come through. Now I know it's possible to do a hysty at home, maybe this is something I will do if it's a choice between that and death.

High five to you both.

As the OP is a nurse I am sure she did a lot of homework and had reasonable certainty that she "could" do this... however , please believe me, this is not something that should be assumed that because it was done by a lay person that it is a procedure that in general can be done by the layman... I assureyou it is NOT.

HOLY MACKERAL!!!!

Good grief! You rock! Must be a surgical nurse

I've always said, let the nurses write the orders and the doctors take the patients- and see who needs the coffee in the morning!

God bless ya and keep us posted

Wow
I would have been afraid of doing this. I am scared to give my horses shots for fear I will do it wrong. Great job.

My dad did that once with a quail. Actually he did not do a hysterectomy but he fixed her so she could lay, she had an egg stuck. I did not watch him he just told us about it when he came back from the coop. My dad seems to just know how to do things. Very gifted person.

Well how is she? Sending healing thoughts to your little hen.

You are AWESOME!! I'm sure Buffy thinks so too, and I know she wouldn't mind being wrapped in a nice fluffy blanket and sitting in a basket for a while so you could use the tub for that nice hot bath! Use lots of bubbles!!

You certainly have my admiration (as I am sure everyone else does, that reads your post), in using your skills to help this small creature.

I have no words but offer prayers and the best wishes for her recovery.
Thanks to the love and caring you have shown her, I feel Buffy has a chance of recovery. Love can work wonders.

Please, don't forget to take care of yourself too.

Please post pics and explain how you actually did this. Maybe you giving details could possibly save other chickens. I commend you and your daughter for doing what you did. I will pray for your little lady. I hope she pulls through on the recovery.
